Chelsea Sets £120m Deadline for Manchester City to Sign Enzo Fernandez
The 2026 summer transfer window has seen Premier League clubs splurge heavily, especially on midfielders. Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson broke records with his £116 million move to Manchester City, only to have Chelsea outbid them for Morgan Rogers at £117 million from Aston Villa.
Now, both City and Chelsea are locked in talks over a bigger deal involving Argentina star Enzo Fernandez, a key figure in England's painful World Cup semifinal loss.
Chelsea's Deadline for Manchester City
Chelsea has given Manchester City a firm deadline: by Friday 5 p.m. BST (12 p.m. ET), City must meet their £120 million asking price for Fernandez. If they fail, Chelsea will hold onto the midfielder through the window. The club is openly sharing this timeline because Fernandez and his representatives have known about this valuation since May.
Why City Wants Fernandez
Enzo Maresca, who left Chelsea mid-2025/26 to take over Pep Guardiola's role at City, values Fernandez highly. Despite some questions about temperament after a World Cup final red card, Fernandez’s versatility impresses Maresca. Since joining Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for £106.8 million, the 25-year-old has scored 31 goals and assisted 29 times in 167 appearances.
Fernandez’s long-range equalizer against England at the World Cup and his last-minute winner against Egypt showcased his clutch play. City also suffered when he scored late in a 1-1 draw at the Etihad shortly after Maresca’s departure from Chelsea.
Fernandez often controls the midfield tempo, reminiscent of his early days at River Plate. At City, where players like Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki play No. 10, Fernandez’s ability to dictate play would be valued.
Though not physically dominant and occasionally undisciplined defensively, City sees Fernandez as a potential elite midfielder replacement amid departures of Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, and Bernardo Silva over two summers.
Replacing Rodri? A Combined Approach
Interest in Fernandez predates Real Madrid and Barcelona’s chase for Rodri, Spain’s World Cup-winning captain. While Rodri plays a deeper role, City’s record signing Anderson could fill that spot if Rodri leaves.
- Elliot Anderson on similarity to Rodri: "Yeah, I think so. I can be. I can do various things within midfield and I'll see where I get used. I'll play anywhere, to be honest."
Fernandez might complement Anderson in midfield rather than directly replace Rodri. City knows a single replacement for Rodri, given his influence, is tough.
Since Rodri’s ACL injury in September 2024, Mateo Kovacic has done well in a deep playmaker role but lacks Rodri’s defensive prowess. Nico Gonzalez, signed in January 2025 for defensive midfield cover, has struggled with consistency.
Both Kovacic and Gonzalez want to stay, but some midfield exits seem necessary if Fernandez arrives. Lille's teen Ayyoub Bouaddi is another target unrelated to Fernandez’s move.
Tijjani Reijnders is linked with a transfer to Al Qadsiah, which could open a spot in City's crowded midfield.
Will City Meet the Deadline?
Under former director Txiki Begiristain, rigid terms might have ended talks. Now, Hugo Viana’s more opportunistic approach could make a deal possible. Chelsea’s £120 million price tag is high but comparable to Anderson’s fee, and Fernandez brings World Cup final experience heading into his prime.
Setting a public deadline shows Chelsea’s strength but might backfire if the transfer window's final day offers more flexibility.
Fernandez was suspended by Chelsea after expressing a wish to live in Madrid amid Real Madrid links. The Spanish giants denied interest in July.
Fernandez and agent Javier Pastore are used to public negotiations. City likely knows Chelsea’s financial model usually favors selling for big money. The saga probably won’t conclude by Friday.
Controversy Surrounding Fernandez
Despite his talent, Fernandez carries baggage. His April interview about Madrid upset Chelsea, and his role in Argentina's heated win over England means he may face hostile crowds regardless of his next club.
The relationship between Chelsea and City is sensitive. Maresca’s delayed appointment at City involved a £17 million compensation deal acknowledging his Chelsea ties.
City fans recall Fernandez's controversial 2024 video singing a chant offensive to France, condemned by the French Football Federation. Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana called it "uninhibited racism" on social media.
Fernandez apologized publicly: "I want to apologise sincerely for a video posted on my Instagram channel during the national team celebrations... The song includes highly offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words. I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologise for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations. That video, that moment, those words, do not reflect my beliefs or my character. I am truly sorry."
