Chelsea’s New Era Under Xabi Alonso: Palestra Secured

Chelsea’s new era under Xabi Alonso has not officially begun, but the club are already moving to his beat.

Marco Palestra, prised away from Inter’s grasp and Atalanta’s plans, is heading to Stamford Bridge in a deal worth over €55 million, and he is unlikely to be the last Italian-based talent the London club try to bring with them.

Alonso’s first big win: Palestra hijacked

Inter thought they had this one. Advanced talks, a clear path, an Atalanta star seemingly destined for San Siro. Then Chelsea arrived.

Within days, the picture changed. According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea struck a verbal agreement with Atalanta and Palestra, with the Italian club set to receive a package exceeding €55m plus a sell-on clause for the 21-year-old right wing-back. A long-term contract awaits the Italy international in London.

The turning point sat not in a boardroom but in a conversation.

Incoming head coach Xabi Alonso personally picked up the phone. He spoke directly with Palestra, laying out his vision and, crucially, his trust in young, versatile defenders. Those close to the player say that talk proved decisive.

Alonso’s track record at Bayer Leverkusen backs that up. He built a title-winning side around emerging talent, showing faith in players still learning the game at the highest level. Palestra fits that mould: a modern full-back who can operate on both flanks, as a right-back, right wing-back, left-back or left wing-back, with the athletic profile to match the Premier League’s intensity.

Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport painted the scene in more colour. Alonso, they reported, told Palestra he had followed him closely at Cagliari and admired his “English-style” physicality. He sees him challenging Malo Gusto on the right and covering the left, where Marc Cucurella has recently vacated his spot.

For Chelsea, it is a statement. For Alonso, it is a first clear imprint on the squad he is about to inherit.

BlueCo look to Como: Ramon on the radar

Chelsea’s gaze has not stopped in Bergamo. It has drifted north, to Como, where another 21-year-old has caught the eye.

Jacobo Ramon, the Spanish centre-back who joined Como from Real Madrid in the summer of 2025, is firmly on Chelsea’s list. Under Cesc Fabregas, Ramon blossomed, becoming one of the standout performers in a side that surged into next season’s Champions League.

Romano revealed on his YouTube channel that Chelsea “appreciate” Ramon and have him among four or five names under consideration for the centre-back position. He is not the only option, but he is very much in the conversation.

The link did not appear out of nowhere. Talks between Chelsea and Como had already opened over Trevoh Chalobah, with the Italian club asking about a possible move. The answer, at least for now, is that Chalobah is too expensive for Como.

Chelsea, sensing an opportunity, flipped the discussion. If Chalobah is out of reach for Como, what about Ramon for Chelsea?

The situation is complicated. Ramon is effectively co-owned, with Real Madrid retaining 50% and a buy-back clause. Any move would need to navigate that structure and Madrid’s long-term view of the player. For Chelsea’s recruitment team and owners BlueCo, that is part of the attraction: a young defender shaped in Madrid’s system, hardened in Italy, and already proven in high-stakes football.

A clear defensive blueprint

Look at the pattern and a strategy emerges.

  • Palestra: 21, tactically flexible, physically robust, already experienced in Serie A, capable on both flanks.
  • Ramon: 21, ball-playing centre-back, developed at Real Madrid, refined under Fabregas, driving Como into Europe.

Chelsea are not just collecting prospects; they are targeting young defenders who have already shouldered responsibility and thrived. The club’s owners, BlueCo, have made no secret of their appetite for emerging talent with resale value and long-term upside. Alonso, with his willingness to trust and develop such players, slots seamlessly into that model.

The pressure at Stamford Bridge will be immediate. Results, not just potential, will define Alonso’s early months. Yet as Chelsea hijack Inter’s move for Palestra and quietly probe Como over Ramon, one thing is clear: the rebuild at the back is not theoretical anymore. It is underway, aggressive, and unapologetically youth-driven.

If Palestra is the first defensive pillar of the Alonso project, the only real question now is whether Ramon becomes the next piece in a back line built for the long haul.
