Chelsea thought they had their Enzo Fernández replacement nailed down. They had the fee, they had the player, they had the plan.

And then Monaco walked away.

In the frantic final hours of the summer window, Chelsea zeroed in on Monaco midfielder Mohamed Camara as their priority target. The London club agreed a £47 million deal for the 22-year-old Senegal international, convinced he was the man to plug the gap left by Enzo’s departure.

Xabi Alonso, expecting reinforcements, had been preparing for Camara’s arrival. Instead, Monaco abruptly pulled the plug at the deadline. No compromise, no extension, no late twist. Negotiations simply stopped.

Chelsea were left short in midfield. Camara stayed in the principality.

From almost sold to undroppable

If the collapse rocked him, it hasn’t shown. Since that failed move, Camara has gone from near-departure to nailed-on starter.

He has played every minute of Monaco’s opening Europa Conference League fixtures, scoring in a 3-2 win over Gornik Zabrze, and featured in all five Ligue 1 matches so far. Monaco sit top of the table, and Camara is right at the heart of it.

His performances have not gone unnoticed in his own dressing room either. After a recent win over Lens, midfield partner Denis Zakaria admitted he had tried to steer Camara away from Chelsea, drawing on his own difficult loan spell at Stamford Bridge.

“Chelsea? I told him that it was good but that it is better here,” Zakaria told reporters. “I know the player and the person that he is; he is very professional. I think that [the transfer saga] has given him even more strength. He was incredible today.”

Camara turns the page

For Camara, the Premier League dream has been parked, not abandoned.

“There was a possibility I could leave,” he said before a recent draw with Strasbourg. “It didn’t go through at the last minute and that’s part of football. I’ve turned the page and am focusing on the season. I can help the team a lot. Football moves fast. Maybe other opportunities will come along. But for now, I’m staying focused on the season with Monaco.”

No sulking. No lingering over what might have been. Just a midfielder playing like he intends to control his own market value.

Chelsea not done yet – but Liverpool arrive

Chelsea, though, have not walked away. The club still see Camara as the answer in that role and are preparing to come back when the window reopens.

Transfer specialist Gianluca Di Marzio expects the Blues to return to the table.

“Will Chelsea renew their interest in Camara? I think so because everything changed for Camara at the last minute,” Di Marzio said. “Chelsea needs a player in that position after Enzo left, so I think that in January, they will try again. Obviously, it’s difficult to say right now if something will be arranged or not. Chelsea will be coming back again.”

This time, though, Chelsea won’t be alone.

Di Marzio claims Liverpool are now tracking the midfielder as they weigh up the contract situation of Alexis Mac Allister and look at ways to reinforce their own midfield before the summer. What began as a straight line from Monaco to west London now looks more like the start of a bidding war.

Monaco brace for a winter storm

Monaco know what’s coming. A player who has just helped drive them to the summit of Ligue 1, who is starring in Europe and growing in stature with every match, will not go unnoticed in January.

Premier League money is circling. Chelsea are desperate to complete Alonso’s rebuild. Liverpool are wary of being caught short if contract talks elsewhere turn. Every standout performance from Camara between now and the winter window only strengthens Monaco’s negotiating hand.

For now, the midfielder insists his focus is fixed on France. The speculation will swell, the offers will arrive, and the numbers will rise.

The real question is simple: when January hits and the phones light up, will Monaco be able to hold their ground – and where will one of Europe’s most in-demand midfielders choose to write his next chapter?
