Celtic Anger Over Monday Night Title Defence Kick-Off

Celtic will begin their Scottish Premiership title defence not with the fanfare of a Saturday afternoon, but under Monday night lights – and the champions are far from happy about it.

The club has publicly voiced its disappointment after being told their opening fixture against Dundee on 3 August will kick off at 19:30 BST on a Monday, a decision shaped by the demands of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games and two Calvin Harris concerts at Hampden.

The champions say they made “repeated representations” to both the SPFL and Police Scotland in an effort to secure a traditional weekend slot, only to be informed there was “no choice” but to move the game. For a club that routinely packs out Celtic Park on opening day, the frustration is obvious.

Games, gigs and a squeezed calendar

The fixture list has collided with a crowded Glasgow events schedule. Cycling events for the Glasgow 2026 Games are scheduled at the Sir Chris Hoy Arena, which sits next door to Celtic Park, across the weekend of 1 and 2 August. At the same time, Calvin Harris will play two large-scale concerts at Hampden, adding another major policing and logistical operation in the city.

With three major venues pulling on the same resources, authorities have pushed Celtic’s league opener into Monday night territory. The club, though, believes a solution should have been found that respected the scale and status of the fixture.

“We feel strongly a weekend timing should have been facilitated in the interests of both teams, both sets of supporters and the status of the fixture,” Celtic said, underlining their irritation at the outcome rather than the process.

The club also revealed it had at least managed to negotiate an earlier evening kick-off, arguing that a 19:30 start would ease the journey for supporters travelling from Ireland, many of whom rely on tight ferry and flight connections to make home games.

TV era shapes opening weekend

The reshaped calendar does not affect Celtic alone. All six fixtures on the opening weekend will be shown live on television as the 2026-27 campaign launches with a full broadcast schedule and a staggered set of dates.

The season will open on Friday 31 July, with Dundee United hosting Rangers at 20:00, a high-profile curtain-raiser under the lights.

Saturday brings a double-header: Falkirk face St Mirren at 15:00 before last season’s runners-up Hearts travel to Aberdeen for a 17:30 kick-off, another game pushed into a TV-friendly slot.

By the time Celtic walk out against Dundee on the Monday night, their rivals will already have laid down early markers. The champions, though, will feel they should have been doing the same at a packed Celtic Park over the weekend, not waiting their turn in a city pulled in three different directions by sport, music and the demands of modern scheduling.
