Celtic Nearing Loan Deal for Chelsea Teenager Landon Emenalo

Celtic are closing in on a season-long loan for Chelsea teenager Landon Emenalo as Martin O’Neill’s rebuild gathers serious pace.

The 18-year-old, as reported by Stephen McGowan in The Herald, has been lined up to provide cover for Kieran Tierney at left-back and could be the next fresh face through the door at Celtic Park. If the deal is finalised, he will join a squad being rapidly reshaped ahead of a crucial fortnight in the club’s season.

Emenalo, son of former Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo, has come through the Stamford Bridge academy and already carries an international twist to his profile, having represented both England and the United States at youth level. His development has not followed a straight line either. Long viewed as a midfielder or central defender, he caught the eye at left-back during three of Chelsea’s pre-season outings under Xabi Alonso, a run that appears to have accelerated Celtic’s interest.

Transfer Activity

The move drops into the middle of a frantic spell of transfer business in Glasgow’s east end. Celtic have just sealed a £6million deal for Egyptian winger Haissem Hassan on a four-year contract, with an option for a further season. German Under-21 midfielder Mika Baur has also travelled to Glasgow and is due to undergo a medical as he closes in on his own move.

Those additions come on top of earlier summer arrivals Camilo Duran and Danish striker Kasper Høgh. Now Hassan, Baur and Emenalo could all be in the building in time for next week’s Champions League play-off first leg against LASK Linz, a tie that will go a long way to defining the early narrative of O’Neill’s return.

West Ham are expected to come back with an improved offer worth £25million for Arne Engels, testing Celtic’s resolve over a player who has quickly become a major asset. On the opposite flank, Celtic are determined not to lose Alistair Johnston despite interest from Everton. The Scottish champions are understood to value the Canadian right-back at more than £15million, a figure that has forced Everton to weigh up alternative options.
