Brentford Floors Chelsea as Thiago Ends Drought

Brentford’s win over Chelsea was built on resilience at the back, patience in midfield and, eventually, release in attack. Igor Thiago, goalless in his previous four, finally snapped and so did the game.

Brentford: Solid foundations, sharp finish

• Caoimhin Kelleher – 6
  An accomplished night without the highlight reel. Positioned well, handled crosses cleanly, but Chelsea never forced him into anything spectacular.
• Michael Kayode – 6
  Careless with a couple of passes and rarely broke beyond halfway. Did the basics defensively, yet offered little thrust going forward.
• Kristoffer Ajer – 7
  A towering figure. Chelsea peppered the box with crosses and set-pieces, and Ajer met most of them, clearing danger and imposing himself aerially.
• Jannik Schuster – 7
  A mixed evening that ended on a high. Outstanding in his own area, throwing himself in front of shots and winning key duels, but visibly nervous on the ball. One overhit backpass nearly turned into a calamity. Then came redemption as he turned provider for the winner.
• Keane Lewis-Potter – 6
  Almost cost his side early with a poor clearance that handed Pedro Neto a chance on 10 minutes. Grew into the game, though, and his experience as a converted attacker showed on the break, where he carried a real threat.
• Yehor Yarmoliuk – 7
  On his 100th appearance he played like a man determined to mark the occasion. Thundered a long-range effort just wide in the 37th minute and then carved out Brentford’s best opening shortly after the restart.
• Vitaly Janelt – 7
  Walked a fine line when he halted a Cole Palmer surge in the box, but got the timing just right. Anchored midfield with authority, relished the physical battle and looked every bit a player on the verge of a Germany call-up under Jurgen Klopp.
• Mikkel Damsgaard – 6
  Below his usual standards for much of the night. Set-pieces lacked their usual whip, shots from distance drifted. Then, from nowhere, he delivered a viciously whipped corner that sparked the opening goal. One moment of quality changed his rating and the game’s rhythm.
• Kevin Schade – 7
  A vital outlet whenever Brentford were under the cosh. Drove at defenders, relieved pressure with his dribbling and saw a first-half effort blocked. Involved in the build-up to the final two goals as Chelsea unravelled.
• Igor Thiago – 7
  Worked relentlessly, often with his back to goal, but his recent drought looked set to continue as chances slipped by. Then came his moment. A late strike to kill the contest, followed by a cathartic celebration as he tore off his shirt. The relief was written all over him.
• Jaidon Anthony – 7
  Barely involved before the interval. Then he missed Brentford’s best chance early in the second half and could have shrunk. Instead he responded with the opener, timing his run and finish to tilt the match.

Chelsea: Palmer shines, others falter

• Emiliano Martinez – 6
  Untroubled for long stretches of the first half, dealing comfortably with what Brentford offered. Had no real chance with the opener and was exposed again as the game slipped away.
• Wesley Fofana – 6
  Brought physicality and handled Brentford’s direct balls reasonably well. Withdrawn on 72 minutes for Josh Acheampong, with little sign he was the problem.
• Maxence Lacroix – 4
  For most of the evening he kept Thiago quiet and won his duels. Then the errors arrived. Gave the ball away for Brentford’s second and squandered a glaring late chance at the other end. Those moments defined his night.
• Levi Colwill – 6
  Solid but subdued after his England omission. Rarely stretched, rarely spectacular, and never quite imposed himself as he can.
• Pedro Neto – 6
  Started sharply. His early drive on 10 minutes forced a save and he remained a constant runner, linking well and stretching Brentford with his pace. The end product, though, never quite materialised.
• Jordan Henderson – 7
  Booed early, then answered with composure. Dictated the tempo in patches, barked instructions and delivered some dangerous corners. Looked anything but rusty.

  On his first Premier League start, he impressed more without the ball than with it. Defended diligently and passed with ambition, often looking to break lines more aggressively than Henderson.
• Pep Chavarria – 7
  One of Chelsea’s brighter performers. Sent in teasing crosses and kept things neat in possession. A naïve piece of defending in the first half gifted Brentford a free-kick, but his overall contribution was positive.
• Cole Palmer – 7
  Chelsea’s standout. Almost everything creative went through him, drifting into pockets, knitting attacks together and working hard off the ball. His free-kick was comfortably saved and the decisive touch he craved never came, but he carried the threat.
• Danny Welbeck – 5
  Handed his first Premier League start for Chelsea at 35. Linked nicely once to create for Neto, yet never truly filled the void left by injured striker Joao Pedro. Hooked on 72 minutes, which told its own story.
• Morgan Rogers – 5
  Flashed a dangerous effort that was blocked just before half-time. For a £117m signing, though, he needed more. Lost the key aerial duel at the back post for Brentford’s opener and finished the match as an emergency striker, chasing a game that had already slipped away.

  Thrown into a difficult situation. As a young defender, he saw plenty of the chaos but had little chance to influence it.
