Bayern Munich Cools Talk of Florian Wirtz Transfer

Bayern Munich have cooled talk of a dramatic rescue act for Florian Wirtz – at least for now – even as the Liverpool playmaker’s stuttering start in England keeps his name circling around Bavaria.

Liverpool beat both Bayern and Manchester City to Wirtz in the summer of 2025, paying around £116m to prise him from Bayer Leverkusen. It was a statement signing. One of Europe’s most inventive young attackers, a German international, choosing Anfield over the Allianz Arena and the Etihad.

The expectations were enormous. The adaptation has been brutal.

Wirtz has struggled to impose himself in the Premier League, with the physical tempo of English football clearly biting into his game. That dip has inevitably fuelled whispers that Bayern might return for the player they once courted so aggressively.

Not so, says Christian Falk.

Bayern cool talk of ‘shock’ Wirtz move

The well-connected German reporter has moved to shut down claims that Bayern are actively working on a surprise bid.

“It is NOT TRUE: Bayern Munich are tracking Florian Wirtz and could make a shock move for the Liverpool player. My information is that this is not true,” Falk told CF Bayern Insider.

The links are not plucked from thin air. Bayern and Wirtz share a long backstory. Before his Liverpool switch, there were two secret meetings: one in Munich, one on Merseyside. Arne Slot ultimately won that tug-of-war, convincing Wirtz to head to Liverpool.

With that history, and with questions being asked about his form in England, the rumour mill was always going to spin.

Falk, though, pushed back on the narrative that Wirtz is flopping.

“To be clear, I don’t necessarily share those concerns; I think Wirtz is performing better than he did last year. He has a new position in the team,” he said, while also pointing out that Bayern have their own creative puzzle to solve with Jamal Musiala, who is still searching for top rhythm after illness and last season’s injury problems.

Swap talk with Olise lingers in the background

Falk insists there is “nothing planned” between Bayern and Wirtz at present. Yet he stopped short of dismissing a more complex scenario: Wirtz arriving as part of a wider chain involving Michael Olise.

Reports have suggested a potential swap between Liverpool and Bayern, or a move that sees Olise sold elsewhere and the funds redirected towards Wirtz. It sounds like transfer-market algebra, but the pieces at least fit on paper.

“So, you can see where some reports have taken these conditions and claimed that one plus one equals two,” Falk explained. “Of course, if Florian Wirtz were, at some point in future, interested in making a return to the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich would be the first team he’d talk to. However, there is nothing planned.”

Bayern’s current reality matters here. Vincent Kompany is bedding in a new system with Olise as the central fulcrum, mirroring his role for the French national team. Musiala remains a key asset with a long contract. The squad is deep, confident, and expensive.

And Liverpool did not pick Wirtz up on the cheap. Any move would have to reflect the £116m they poured into him.

Even so, the idea of a high-end reshuffle refuses to die.

“Everyone is hoping the former Crystal Palace star signs a new contract, but if not, and he decides for a transfer, of course Florian Wirtz would be a player who’s interesting for Bayern Munich,” Falk admitted.

“The German can play on the side or centrally. This would be a very interesting thing, and if you make a swap deal with Liverpool or sell Olise for a lot of money to Real Madrid, you have the money to make an offer for Wirtz.

“So, there are many, many positions which have to be discussed. I wouldn’t say it’s not true that Bayern Munich would have thought of that.”

For now, Wirtz remains Liverpool’s problem to solve and Bayern’s hypothetical future project. The question is simple: will his form in England kill the conversation, or drag Bayern back into a saga they once thought they’d already lost?
