Bayern Munich Hesitates on Feyenoord's Read as Manchester City Show Interest

Bayern Munich have hit the brakes in their pursuit of Feyenoord’s highly rated right-back Read, just as Manchester City begin to move into position.

According to Sky, negotiations between the teenager’s camp and the German champions have stalled over one issue that dictates almost everything in the modern market: the fee. Feyenoord are standing firm at around 30 million euros. It is a bold valuation for a 19-year-old who has yet to string together a full season of top-level consistency.

Bayern’s hesitation is not just about price. It is about risk.

Read has been dealing with a persistent thigh problem that has kept him out since late November, aside from a brief substitute appearance against Alkmaar. For a club that has been burned before on expensive, injury-affected signings, sanctioning such a sizeable investment in a player still fighting for full fitness demands a level of conviction they have not yet reached.

On the pitch, the argument for him is clear enough. In 53 Eredivisie appearances, Read has produced 16 goal contributions—five goals and eleven assists—from full-back. He has already sampled both the Champions League and Europa League, and his profile fits the modern template: aggressive going forward, technically secure, comfortable operating high up the pitch. It is exactly the sort of right-back Bayern still lack in their long-term structure.

That gap in Munich has drawn attention elsewhere.

Reports from Bild and Sky Sports indicate that Manchester City have entered the frame and are now closely tracking Read in the run-in to the season. City’s recruitment team is weighing up a move, aware that dynamic, attack-minded full-backs are at a premium and rarely available on long contracts.

And that contract matters. Read is tied to Feyenoord until 2029, giving the Dutch club a position of real strength at the negotiating table. If City decide to push hard, the price is unlikely to come down. It could easily climb beyond the 30 million euros currently being discussed, especially with two financial heavyweights involved.

Liverpool had looked at the situation earlier, exploring the possibility of a winter move, but ultimately chose not to act. That decision has left the stage to Bayern and City.

For now, Bayern are hesitating, City are watching, and Feyenoord are waiting. The next move will say a lot about which giant is truly prepared to gamble big on a teenager whose ceiling is obvious, but whose body still has to prove it can handle the demands of the very top.
