Barnes: Liverpool Should Not Splurge on Forwards
John Barnes has warned against a transfer-market splurge under Arne Slot and backed Liverpool’s current forwards to carry the load, while also accusing Mohamed Salah of overstepping the mark with his recent comments about the club’s playing style.
Barnes: Liverpool don’t need another forward
The former Liverpool winger, speaking to Betfred, dismissed the idea that Slot’s early months in charge should be defined by big-money attacking signings.
“The solution to the problem isn’t just signing players because we have players here,” Barnes said. “If somebody comes in, then what are we going to do with [Alexander] Isak, [Hugo] Ekitike and Rio Ngumoha, who’s coming through. We don’t need to sign anybody as far as I’m concerned because we need to work with what we have.”
For Barnes, the key lies in chemistry, not chequebooks.
“We need to get the balance right, we need to get the blend right,” he continued. “Unfortunately people believe the solution to any problem is just to keep signing more players. I’ve seen we’ve been linked with Jarrod Bowen because West Ham United have been relegated, but I think what we have already is enough and I’m sure they can all stick together and work together.”
It is a clear challenge to the idea that Slot must reshape the frontline immediately. In Barnes’ view, the raw materials are already in the building; the job now is to mould them.
Salah send-off right call – but comments “crazy and ridiculous”
Barnes also backed Slot’s decision to start Salah in his Anfield farewell, sharing the stage with Andy Robertson, even as he criticised the Egyptian’s public stance on how Liverpool should play after Jurgen Klopp.
“Absolutely, Slot did the right thing,” Barnes said. “I mean, Salah’s going, so if he was staying it could have been a bit different, but as he’s going, it was good for everybody to see Mo leave on a high.”
Then came the sting.
“But I think Mo was wrong to do what he did and what he said,” Barnes added.
Salah had suggested that Liverpool’s trademark “heavy metal football” should remain a non-negotiable for any manager following Klopp. Barnes believes that crosses a line.
“If you analyse what Mo said, he’s saying that any Liverpool manager needs to be subservient to the way Jurgen Klopp played as a non-negotiable, which is rubbish,” he said. “Any manager at Liverpool needs to say they’re doing it their way, not Jurgen’s way, so for Mo to say that ‘heavy metal football’ is a non-negotiable is crazy and ridiculous, so he was wrong to say it.”
For Barnes, Slot’s handling of the situation – giving Salah a full Anfield send-off despite the comments – underlined the Dutchman’s authority and composure.
“I think Arne Slot was the bigger man to give Mo his send-off for being a great servant,” he said.
The message is blunt. Slot must be allowed to be his own manager, with his own ideas, and he must do it by trusting the squad already in front of him.
