Barcelona Targets Castello Lukeba in Centre-Back Search

Barcelona’s search for a new centre-back has dragged through the summer with more questions than answers, but one name is now starting to move from the rumour mill into something more concrete: Castello Lukeba.

For weeks, the Catalan club have been loosely linked with a carousel of defenders – Aymeric Laporte, Alessandro Bastoni, Cristian Romero and Lukeba among them – without any of those stories really taking off. A priority position, but little real progress. Until now.

Direct line to Leipzig

According to SPORT, Barcelona have opened talks with RB Leipzig to ask about Lukeba’s situation and the price tag attached to him. Not a formal negotiation yet, but a clear first step.

The profile fits neatly. Lukeba is left-footed, young and already established at a high level, the kind of modern centre-back who can grow into a long-term pillar. Deco and Hansi Flick are said to be particularly enamoured with him and have kept his name at the top of their defensive shortlist for some time.

At Leipzig, Lukeba has attracted serious attention. Premier League clubs have already put options in front of him, yet he remains in the Bundesliga for now. The chance to wear the Barcelona shirt, though, is understood to appeal to him and he is open to making that leap.

His current market value is around €30 million. Barcelona’s call to Leipzig centred on one basic question: what will it actually cost to take him out of Germany?

Araujo gone, Kounde in the balance

The urgency is obvious. Ronald Araujo has already left for Liverpool, ripping a hole straight through the heart of Barcelona’s defence. That departure has turned centre-back from a medium-term concern into a live issue.

Everything now leans on Jules Kounde. The Frenchman has offers on the table and a move away cannot be ruled out. If Kounde goes, the club’s stance changes instantly: they would be pushed towards a bigger, more expensive defensive signing to stabilise the back line.

That decision will shape Lukeba’s chances. If Kounde stays, a €30 million investment in a rising talent looks like a strategic move. If Kounde leaves, Barcelona may be forced to weigh Lukeba against a more established, high-cost option.

Complicating the picture is Flick’s view of other targets. The coach is not convinced by some of the names that have circulated, including Bastoni and Romero, which narrows the realistic pool. In that context, Lukeba stands out as one of the most viable options on the market, alongside Laporte.

Barcelona have made their first move. Now the next domino is clear: what happens with Kounde will tell everyone just how serious they are about bringing Castello Lukeba to the Camp Nou.
