Barcelona have turned their attention to one of Brazil’s newest defensive prospects. Athletico’s teenage centre-back Arthur Dias is now firmly on the Catalan club’s radar after his recent rise under Carlo Ancelotti.

Barça’s head of scouting travelled to Arena da Baixada to watch Athletico vs Bahia in person, with a clear objective: assess the 19-year-old who has just broken into the Brazil national team. The visit, reported by ESPN, underlines how quickly Arthur’s profile has grown.

Ancelotti’s first squad after the World Cup contained a surprise. Among established names like Gabriel Magalhães (Arsenal), Jair (Nottingham Forest), Marquinhos (PSG) and Vitor Reis (Manchester City), there was Arthur Dias – a defender who only made his professional debut in 2025.

He is very much a product of Athletico. Formed at the club, Arthur stepped up to the first team last year and immediately played a key role in securing promotion to Série A. He didn’t just break through; he stayed in.

This season has confirmed the trajectory. Athletico sit third in the Brasileirão with 49 points, chasing only Flamengo (60) and Palmeiras (57), and Arthur has been central to that push. In 2026, he has started all 32 of his appearances for Furacão, an ever-present in the heart of the back line.

For Barcelona, always searching for the next long-term pillar in defence, the combination is hard to ignore: a 19-year-old starter, a promotion on his CV, a top-three league campaign, and now a Brazil call-up under one of the game’s most respected coaches.
