Barcelona's Striker Options Dwindle as Joao Pedro Commits to Chelsea
Barcelona’s shrinking list of centre-forward options just got shorter. One of the names on Deco’s desk is no longer available. The door hasn’t just closed on Joao Pedro – it’s been bolted shut until 2034.
Chelsea confirmed on their official channels on Saturday that the Brazilian forward has signed a new long-term contract running for another decade, a statement of intent from a club determined to ring‑fence one of its key attacking weapons. For Barcelona, already bracing for disappointment in their pursuit of Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez, it is a stinging setback.
Deco had identified Joao Pedro as a serious candidate to strengthen the attack this season, part of a shortlist built around mobility, work rate and goals. Instead, the 24-year-old has doubled down on life in London.
“I am very happy to sign a new contract with Chelsea. I always dreamed of playing for a big club, and it means a lot to me to commit to this club for the long term. Chelsea have a long history of victories, and have big ambitions for the future,” Joao Pedro said after putting pen to paper.
Instant impact in blue
Chelsea’s conviction is rooted in performance, not promise. Joao Pedro arrived from Brighton & Hove Albion in July 2025 and wasted no time justifying the move. The stage could hardly have been bigger: the FIFA Club World Cup. He scored in both the semi-final and the final, striking twice against former club Fluminense to fire Chelsea into the showpiece and then finding the net against Paris Saint-Germain to help clinch the title.
From there, his momentum never really dipped. Across his first full campaign, the 2025–2026 season, Joao Pedro hit 20 goals in all competitions. The numbers came with decisive moments attached. He opened Chelsea’s league account away at West Ham United, then delivered the only goal in a tight, statement win at Tottenham Hotspur.
Europe felt his influence as well. When Chelsea faced Napoli in the UEFA Champions League, Joao Pedro stepped up again, scoring twice to power the Blues past the Italian side and underline his growing status as a big-game forward.
Supporters responded. At the end of that 2025–2026 season, they voted him Player of the Season, a clear verdict on his importance to the team’s new era.
Chelsea build around their No 9
The new deal to 2034 is not just a reward; it is a blueprint. Chelsea see Joao Pedro as a central pillar of their project, and the player is fully aligned with that vision.
“Everyone is very excited for this season. We know we are capable of achieving many things, we have a great team, and we have a manager who wants to win and has won before. I am fully committed, everyone is ready, and we hope we can achieve our goals,” he said, sounding every inch like a forward planning his peak years at Stamford Bridge.
For Barcelona, the message is blunt. One more target gone, and the market growing harsher by the week. For Chelsea, it’s simpler: the striker who delivered a world title, 20 goals and a Player of the Season award in his first full campaign is staying put, right at the heart of their attack.
