Two offers fell short, with the second nearing City’s initial valuation of $81 million (£60 million).

The increased price reflects City's reluctance to lose a pivotal midfielder during a time of transition under coach Enzo Maresca. With key players like Pep Guardiola, Bernardo Silva, and John Stones departing, Rodri's sale could help finance a midfield overhaul.

Midfield Reinforcements Are Costly

Barcelona is reportedly targeting Enzo Fernández and Ayyoub Bouaddi, expected to cost over $270 million combined, while Elliot Anderson has already been signed for $156.5 million. Although City’s finances are stable compared to Barcelona’s, the bigger question is whether the Spanish champions can afford to miss this chance to sign Rodri.

Plans to renovate Camp Nou starting June 2027 will force Barcelona to relocate temporarily, reducing matchday revenues due to smaller stadium capacity at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. Renovation expenses will add financial strain, meaning the current flexibility may vanish by next summer.

This looming burden could push Barcelona to complete the Rodri deal now rather than later. On the field, Frenkie de Jong’s serious knee injury from the World Cup leaves a gap in midfield that Rodri could fill immediately. He could also mentor young talent like Marc Bernal, seen as Sergio Busquets' successor.

Barcelona must also consider striker options amid possible departures of Lewandowski and Torres. At just 18, Hamza Abdelkarim stands as the only natural center forward on the roster.
