Barcelona Advances on Rodri Transfer with €70m Limit

FC Barcelona have tightened their grip on the Rodri operation, pushing hard to close a deal with Manchester City while refusing to break the financial framework they set from day one.

The Catalan club, in constant contact with the midfielder’s camp, have returned to City with a fresh package of proposals. The message from Barcelona is blunt: the total outlay will not exceed €70 million, according to SPORT.

Barça hold the line at €70m

Several deal structures are on the table, but Barcelona’s preferred formula is clear. They are ready to put down €60m–€65m in guaranteed money, with the rest made up of performance-related bonuses, which they view as the fairest final offer.

That figure is not plucked from thin air. It is close to the amount City were willing to accept when they spoke to Real Madrid previously, and below the €80m they initially quoted to Barcelona at the start of talks.

The gap between the clubs has been shrinking. Negotiations have rolled on for days, and both sides are now working within a much narrower band of numbers. Inside the Barça offices, optimism is growing that they can get it over the line, even if the final stretch could still take several more hours or a couple of days.

The shared objective is to seal the transfer before the end of the week.

Race against the calendar

Rodri would already have liked to be in Barcelona, training alongside his Spain teammates and settling into a new dressing room. The timing has not allowed it. Paperwork and numbers are still being traded while pre-season plans move on.

The next key date is Friday. The midfielder is due back in Manchester that day for medical checks and the start of City’s pre-season preparations. Barça’s aim is simple: have the deal done before then so he never has to report back.

If the agreement is not fully signed off by that point, it is considered very likely that City will still allow him to remain away from Manchester, especially if talks are at the final stage and only details remain.

A contract to match a Ballon d’Or winner

On the player’s side, the road is already paved. Rodri has an agreement in principle with Barcelona for a four-year contract on a top-tier salary.

His arrival would immediately place him among the three best-paid players in the squad. The numbers reflect his status as a Ballon d’Or winner and standout performer at the World Cup, as well as the wage he currently earns at City and the renewal offer he previously had on the table from the English champions.

Sporting director Deco is leading Barcelona’s push, staying in permanent contact with Manchester City’s sporting chief Hugo Viana as they try to close the final gap.

From the start, the Catalan club have insisted they will not overpay. Rodri’s contract runs out at the end of this season, and that expiry date has always been a central part of their negotiating stance. A package up to €70m, bonuses included, is seen at the Camp Nou as a fair valuation in that context.

The structure most likely to unlock the agreement is now clear: €65m guaranteed plus €5m in relatively straightforward bonuses tied to collective trophies.

With the figures edging closer and the clock ticking towards Friday, Barcelona sense that the decisive breakthrough could arrive at any moment.
