Barcelona's Tactical Shift: Why Gordon Was Chosen Over Rashford

Barcelona sporting director Deco has drawn a clear tactical line between Anthony Gordon and Marcus Rashford, explaining why the club turned away from a cut-price deal for last season’s loanee and instead pushed hard to land the former Newcastle winger.

Rashford hit 14 goals in all competitions during his 12-month loan at the Camp Nou, helping Barça to a La Liga and Copa del Rey double. The club had the option to make his stay permanent for £30.3m (35m euros) this summer – a bargain in today’s market for a 28-year-old England international.

They walked away.

Rashford returned to Manchester United, and Barcelona went in a different, far more expensive direction.

Gordon and Rodri: Big Fees, Big Statements

Anthony Gordon and Manchester City midfielder Rodri became Barcelona’s headline signings of the summer window, with Deco framing both as answers to specific structural issues in Hansi Flick’s squad.

Gordon arrived from Newcastle United in a deal worth more than 80m euros (£69.3m), a transfer he had long imagined. The winger has said he believed from the age of three that he would one day play for Barcelona, and Deco admitted that desire to join played its part.

“The big advantage we had is that the player wanted to come,” Deco told Catalan station RAC1, noting that Gordon was even prepared to apply pressure on Newcastle to secure the move.

Rodri, meanwhile, plugged another gap in Flick’s blueprint, but it was on the flanks where Deco felt Barcelona had to act decisively.

Rashford Praised, Gordon Preferred

Deco was careful to credit Rashford’s impact last season before underlining why the club pivoted to Gordon.

“We are extremely grateful to Rashford,” he said. “He contributed a lot last season, but our idea of play is much more linked to Anthony's. His style fits with what the coach is looking for.”

That line is the crux of it. This was not about goals or reputation. It was about energy, intensity and alignment with Flick’s demands.

Deco revealed that when Raphinha missed games last season, the entire team’s tempo dropped.

“In the case of Gordon, we saw that he was one of the figures we needed,” he explained. “When Raphinha wasn't on the pitch, the team lost energy and with him we could solve it.”

Barcelona, he said, had “a clear idea” of the profile they wanted. They combed the market for wide players, scouring options and confronting the financial and negotiating realities of prising talent from England.

“We needed more intensity. We analysed a lot of wingers. Signing someone from the Premier League is almost impossible, but [Flick] was clear with what he wanted and we worked on a deal from there.”

Early Return on a Big Bet

Five games into his Barcelona career, Gordon is already justifying the club’s conviction. He has made five appearances and delivered four assists, immediately injecting the vertical threat and relentlessness Flick craves from his wide forwards.

The team’s numbers back up Deco’s argument. Barcelona have won all four of their La Liga matches so far, scoring 17 goals and conceding only two. The attack looks sharp, aggressive, and far closer to the high-energy model Flick built his reputation on.

Rashford, for all his contribution last season and the modest fee on offer, belonged to a different tactical chapter. Gordon, in Deco’s eyes, is the face of the next one.
