Barcelona Drops World Cup Celebration Due to Political Strife

Barcelona has decided not to hold the planned tribute honoring its eight players who won the World Cup with Spain. The club’s president, Joan Laporta, confirmed the cancellation following violent clashes between fans and police, reflecting heightened political tensions in the region.

Tensions Affecting Camp Nou Events

The tribute was scheduled ahead of Barcelona’s La Liga match against Athletic Club at Camp Nou, set for Thursday. Other Spanish clubs have already celebrated their international stars who lifted the World Cup trophy last month in New Jersey. Yet, recent disturbances forced the Catalan club to reconsider.

These disturbances were triggered after a 5-0 win against Elche, when visiting supporters faced police aggression, and their pro-independence Estelada flags were confiscated. This harsh response from authorities compelled the club to halt the pre-match ceremony.

Joan Laporta Explains the Decision

"The ceremony to honour the world champions will not take place because it is not the right context," said Laporta. "The Royal Spanish Football Federation understands our decision."

Laporta also defended the supporters’ right to show the Estelada flag, which symbolizes Catalan independence and freedom of expression for many fans.

"Football should unite, not divide," he added. "The Estelada represents the mindset of many Barca supporters and Catalans. It is part of freedom of expression."

Condemnation of Police Actions

The club president criticized the national police's treatment of fans displaying regional symbols, calling the actions disproportionate.

"We condemn and reject the excessive force used by police against Barca fans carrying the Estelada before the Elche game," Laporta stated. "We demand appropriate sanctions once the facts are established."

He emphasized the need for safety and respect for fans in the future.

"We hope such punishments ensure that Catalans and Barca supporters can carry their flags without fear of harm or stigmatization by security forces."

Focus Shifts Back to Football

Despite the political drama off the field, Barcelona is preparing to face Athletic Club on Thursday evening, minus the pre-match celebrations. The team aims to keep up its winning streak following a commanding victory over Elche and continue strong performances in La Liga.
