Aston Villa Nears Signing of Leon Goretzka on Free Transfer

Aston Villa are closing in on a statement signing, with Germany international Leon Goretzka poised to join on a free transfer.

The 31-year-old midfielder is available after leaving Bayern Munich in the summer, and Villa have held what are understood to be positive talks as Unai Emery moves quickly to rebuild the spine of a squad stripped of several key names.

Emery turns to Goretzka after Palhinha blow

Emery has been hunting midfield power and experience since Amadou Onana was ruled out until next year with a knee injury suffered while on World Cup duty with Belgium. That setback ripped a hole in Villa’s plans for the new season and forced a rethink in the market.

They pushed to reunite Goretzka with his former Bayern team-mate Joao Palhinha, only to see that pursuit stall. Palhinha is now expected to head to Benfica instead, leaving Villa to pivot sharply back towards the free-agent opportunity in front of them.

Goretzka brings pedigree few can match. Over eight years at Bayern he racked up 312 appearances and 51 goals, driving the midfield of a side that dominated Germany and conquered Europe. He lifted seven Bundesliga titles and the Champions League in 2020, becoming a central figure in one of the club’s most relentless eras.

On the international stage, his numbers are just as serious: 73 caps for Germany and three outings at this summer’s World Cup underline the level of player Villa are trying to drop into their dressing room without paying a transfer fee.

Villa’s summer exodus forces a reset

That experience is badly needed. Villa have watched a core of their squad walk out of the door in recent weeks, and every departure has raised the stakes for the next arrival.

Ezri Konsa completed a move to Arsenal on Friday in a deal worth an initial £51m, stripping Emery of a defensive mainstay. Morgan Rogers followed him out, sold to Chelsea for £117m in one of the window’s headline transfers.

The reshaping has not stopped there. Youri Tielemans joined Manchester United in July, taking his passing range and Premier League know-how with him, while Lucas Digne returned to Paris St-Germain earlier this month to close his own Villa chapter.

Those exits have left gaps all over the pitch. Goretzka, if Villa get it over the line, would not just be another body. He would be a leader, a voice, and a ready-made presence for a side suddenly light on seasoned winners.

Watkins future still hanging in the balance

Emery’s rebuild is complicated by uncertainty at the top end of the pitch as well. He admitted on Friday that he cannot guarantee England striker Ollie Watkins will still be at Villa Park when the transfer window shuts, with Al-Hilal pushing hard from Saudi Arabia.

“We have an issue with him, it's clear. He is our player. We have had offers for him,” Emery said, laying bare the tension around one of the club’s most important assets.

“I don't want to sell him but it can change because if it's a good option for him and the club and I can replace him in the squad, this is the routine we have and we did before with the players who are leaving.”

That is the reality at Villa now: big players going out, big decisions coming fast, and big names like Goretzka targeted to steady the project.

If the German walks through the door next, it will signal exactly how serious Emery is about keeping Villa in the company their recent sales suggest they belong to.
