Since joining from Real Sociedad for £31.6 million in August 2024, Merino has scored 16 goals in 84 games across all competitions. Although his Premier League minutes have been scarce, with only four substitute appearances this season, he cherished the opportunity to lead the team against Ipswich.

"It’s a huge honour," Merino said. "I’m proud to represent this club in this way, wearing the armband – many legends have done it before me. It brings me happiness, and I try to do my best to represent the club. I know how big it is to wear the armband, so I’m really happy."
