Arteta: Few Players Can Enhance Arsenal – Transfer Pursuit Continues

Mikel Arteta knows exactly what he wants. Finding it is the problem.

The Arsenal manager admitted there are “very few players” in world football capable of walking straight into his Premier League-winning XI, yet he made it clear the club are still pushing for a headline signing before the window closes.

Arsenal, crowned champions last season, were strongly linked with Vinicius Jr before the Brazilian committed his future to Real Madrid. With that door firmly shut, attention has swung to Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez and Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola.

Both are ambitious targets. Both would be expensive. And Arsenal know it.

Any deal is likely to demand a fee well beyond the £75m they paid Newcastle for Bruno Guimaraes, but the champions are prepared to wait for the right opportunity rather than move for the wrong player.

“I think for the margins to improve, there are very few players in the market that are available to do that and bring that to the club,” Arteta said after Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Como on Wednesday. “But again, we are actively looking to improve that and we're going to try.”

The message is consistent: standards are high, and so is the bar for recruitment.

Arteta stressed that Arsenal’s work in the market is far from finished.

“Every time we have an opportunity to improve the squad and bring more quality and depth to the squad, we need to do that,” he said. “We are actively trying to do so. The thing in the market is that it doesn't just depend on you. We are very clear on that.”

So Arsenal wait, plan and negotiate, knowing that one major addition could tilt the title race again.

While the transfer machine whirs in the background, the night against Como belonged, emotionally at least, to Myles Lewis-Skelly. The 19-year-old celebrated his goal with visible passion amid reports Arsenal have offered him to Manchester United and Chelsea.

Arteta, though, refused to be drawn into the noise around the teenager’s future.

“I'm not going to talk about any speculation,” he said. “If there is a speculation about our player, it's a good sign. That means that we attract attention and they're doing a good job.”

Lewis-Skelly has been asked to adapt during pre-season, operating more as a No 6 with senior midfielders away on international duty. Arteta liked what he saw.

“I think he had a really good pre-season,” the manager added. “I think we asked him to play in a different position, because he played more as a six, because we lacked central midfielders, obviously with international duties, and I think he had a really consistent pre-season.”

Arsenal’s core is strong, their standards are set and the title on the shelf is proof of concept. The question now is whether they can land one of those “very few” players Arteta believes can raise this team even higher.
