Arsenal Eyes William Pacho Amid Salary Concerns

Arsenal may have packed their defence with fresh talent this summer, but the transfer radar at London Colney hasn’t switched off yet.

According to reports from Bolavip, Paris Saint-Germain centre-back William Pacho remains firmly on the Gunners’ list, even after signing a new deal at the Parc des Princes. The Ecuador international, who has quickly built a reputation as one of Europe’s most assured young defenders, “still has a market” and is said to be in the plans of both Arsenal and Manchester City.

On paper, Mikel Arteta already has the kind of defensive depth most managers envy.

This summer alone, Arsenal brought in Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen for £34.5m and Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for £51m, adding to a back line that already includes William Saliba, Cristhian Mosquera, Ben White, Gabriel Magalhaes, Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori and academy product Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Quality over quantity was the mantra before the window closed on September 1. Arsenal focused on targeted upgrades, with sporting director Andrea Berta also exploring another attacking signing before ultimately holding fire rather than overpaying for a second-choice option.

Names like Morgan Rogers, Vinicius Junior and Julian Alvarez were all seriously considered. None arrived. Arsenal chose stability and patience in the final third.

Yet in defence, where they already look loaded, Pacho still tempts them. That says plenty about how highly he is rated.

The salary hurdle

The interest from England is clear. Bolavip report that Arsenal are “open to making a move” for Pacho, with both the Gunners and Manchester City prepared to put a “very lucrative salary” on the table to lure him away from Paris, where he currently earns around €11m a year.

That figure sets the tone. Any Premier League offer would need to top his PSG wages.

For City, those numbers “wouldn’t be a problem.” The champions have never shied away from paying elite-level contracts for players they consider central to their project.

For Arsenal, it’s trickier. Not because the money isn’t there, but because of the internal structure they’ve worked hard to build.

Bolavip highlight the tension: Saliba is Arsenal’s highest-paid defender on €14m per year, and only five players at the club earn more than Pacho’s current €11m. Handing a new arrival an even bigger deal would test the club’s wage hierarchy and could have a knock-on effect in future negotiations.

So the equation is simple but awkward: how badly do Arsenal want Pacho, and how far are they willing to stretch a model they’ve been careful to protect?

Carragher and Wright question missed Barcola move

While Arsenal weigh up another defensive splash, some big names believe the real missed opportunity this summer came at the other end of the pitch.

Jamie Carragher admitted he was stunned Arsenal didn’t push harder for Bradley Barcola before the winger joined Liverpool from PSG.

Speaking on The Overlap, Carragher said:

“I’m happy it didn’t happen but I was looking at the Barcola thing.

“For me with Arsenal, left wing has always felt like where the drop is compared to [Bukayo] Saka, [Martin] Odegaard, [Kai] Havertz.

“The new kid [Christos] Tzolis has made a decent start. But the longer the Barcola thing went on, and then Arsenal didn’t get Vinicius Jr or Alvarez, I was thinking is that [signing Barcola] not the one?”

Ian Wright didn’t hesitate to back that view.

“That is the player Arsenal need to sign,” the club legend replied. “He comes in from a brilliant PSG side and he’s played with players who are on that level. Now he’s coming into a Liverpool side where he is that superstar and will bring them [his teammates] up there.

“That’s what we needed. Whether you think Morgan Rogers could have done that, I would have been happy with that. But Barcola was available.”

Their frustration cuts to the heart of Arsenal’s summer: a defence reinforced with precision, a forward line left one big signing short.
