Arsenal Acquire Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle for £75 Million

Arsenal, the Premier League champions, have finalized the transfer of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United. The deal, confirmed on Saturday, is reported to be worth £75 million ($101.2 million).

The 28-year-old, who captained Newcastle and spent four-and-a-half seasons with the club, has agreed to a long-term contract with the Gunners, who ended their 22-year wait for the English top-flight title last season.

Strengthening Arsenal's Midfield

Guimaraes stands as Arsenal’s most notable signing this transfer window, joining recent additions Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis at the Emirates Stadium.

"With Bruno joining us, we are further strengthening the heart of our team," stated Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta. "Bruno can operate both as a defensive midfielder and a box-to-box player. He mixes quality with hard work and consistently delivers goals and assists. His arrival will help Mikel Arteta refine our playing style and boost competition within the squad, which is key for winning major trophies."

The exact transfer fee was not officially disclosed, but Newcastle confirmed it ranks among the top 10 highest fees ever received for a player aged 28 or older.

From Newcastle to North London

Guimaraes had been linked with Arsenal since January 2022 when he moved from Lyon to Newcastle. Now, he reunites with manager Mikel Arteta after making 195 appearances and scoring 31 goals for the Magpies.

Under former coach Eddie Howe, Guimaraes played a key role in ending Newcastle's 54-year trophy drought by winning the 2023 League Cup.

"This is one of the toughest decisions of my life. When I arrived, the club faced many challenges, and I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved together," Guimaraes said in a statement released by Newcastle. "I fell in love with this place. I truly mean that."

Howe recently stepped down as Newcastle’s manager, succeeded by German Matthias Jaissle.

Competition in Arsenal's Midfield

Guimaraes, who represented Brazil at the latest World Cup, will vie for midfield spots alongside Declan Rice, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino.

Arsenal will begin their season facing Manchester City in the Community Shield next Sunday, followed by a Premier League opener against newly promoted Coventry five days later.

Newcastle will start their campaign at home against Liverpool on August 23.
