Arsenal Pursue Leicester Winger Jeremy Monga
Arsenal have stepped up their pursuit of Leicester City winger Jeremy Monga, with the teenager understood to favour a move to the Premier League champions over Chelsea and Manchester United.
The 16-year-old has attracted interest from all three clubs during the summer window, but the picture is starting to clear. According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal are now driving the negotiations, encouraged by Monga’s indication that he would agree to a switch to north London.
For Leicester, the timing could hardly be worse. Fresh from relegation from the Championship, the Foxes now face the prospect of losing one of the brightest talents in their academy just as they attempt to reset the club’s trajectory.
Monga has already committed to a professional contract with Leicester, a deal that activates when he turns 17 on July 10. That agreement gives Leicester vital leverage: they will be able to command a transfer fee rather than lose him for minimal compensation.
Arsenal’s push, Chelsea’s long-term youth strategy and Manchester United’s need for fresh attacking talent all converged on the same player. The difference now is Monga’s preference. When three giants circle, the teenager has made it clear which badge he wants on his first major contract.
Leicester can negotiate from a position of contractual protection, but they may not be able to resist the pull of a substantial offer from the champions for a player who has yet to make a senior impact. For Arsenal, landing Monga would be another statement that the club intend to lock down the next generation as fiercely as they compete for the present.
