Arsenal Pursue Konsa Amid Saliba Fitness Concerns
Arsenal’s summer, so far carefully mapped out, has been jolted by one awkward question: how serious is William Saliba’s back problem?
The Frenchman was forced off in his country’s World Cup semi-final defeat, having carried a back issue into the game. At 25, he is central to Mikel Arteta’s plans and usually the picture of reliability. Now he is being assessed, and the club are waiting for clarity on whether their defensive pillar needs a spell on the sidelines.
While they wait, they are moving.
Konsa back on the radar
Ezri Konsa has again emerged as a live option. The Guardian report that Arsenal have expressed an interest in the Aston Villa and England centre-back, a defender whose calm on the ball and recovery pace have made him one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers.
This is not the first time Arsenal have looked at Konsa, but Saliba’s situation sharpens the focus. If the Frenchman misses any significant period, Arteta cannot afford to be short in the one area that underpinned last season’s progress: a stable, aggressive back line.
Konsa, 26, fits the profile. Premier League hardened. Homegrown. Comfortable stepping into wide areas or holding the middle in a high line. Villa will not want to sell, and certainly not cheaply, yet Arsenal’s interest is clear.
Rogers next in line
The London club are not only shopping in Birmingham for a centre-back. They are also expected to make an offer for Morgan Rogers, Konsa’s club and international team-mate.
Rogers, 23, has been on Arsenal’s list for some time. A versatile attacker who can operate off the flank or between the lines, he offers the sort of positional flexibility Arteta prizes. With his World Cup involvement winding down, Arsenal are said to be preparing a bid, ready to test Villa’s resolve a second time.
If both pursuits advance, Villa face the prospect of fending off a double raid on key members of their English core.
Tzolis deal close
On the flanks, Arsenal’s work is more advanced. A deal is in place with Club Brugge for winger Cristos Tzolis, with the move to the Emirates described as close to completion.
Tzolis adds another direct, one‑v‑one option to a forward line already rich in technicians. For a side that often dominates territory but sometimes craves a more ruthless wide threat, his arrival would be a clear tactical play: more pace, more incision, more chaos in the final third.
Barcelona push for Alvarez
While Arsenal build out their attacking options, they are not alone in chasing one of Europe’s most coveted forwards.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has again underlined his desire to sign Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, a player Arsenal also admire. The Catalan club’s public stance keeps the pressure high. Any move for Alvarez will be a fight on multiple fronts, with finances, project, and playing time all in the balance.
For Arsenal, that interest from Barcelona is a reminder: if they want Alvarez, they will need to be decisive.
Villa move for Gomes and Estupinan
At the same time as fielding interest in their own players, Aston Villa are pushing ahead with their own rebuild.
They are close to confirming the signing of Joao Gomes from Wolves in a deal worth around £38m. The Brazilian midfielder would add bite and energy to Unai Emery’s midfield, a statement that Villa intend to remain firmly in the European conversation.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano also reports that Villa have agreed personal terms with AC Milan left-back Pervis Estupinan. Should they finalise that move, Emery would gain another attack-minded full-back, reinforcing a side already built on aggressive, front-foot football.
Forest launch big move for Bergvall
Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest are again ready to spend big in midfield.
According to BBC Sport, Forest are set to launch a £45m bid for Spurs midfielder Lucas Bergvall after seeing a previous offer rejected for the Sweden international. Forest still want to bring in another midfielder alongside Bergvall, a clear sign that they are not content to simply survive; they want to reshape the centre of the pitch around younger, high-ceiling talent.
It is a bold play, and an expensive one, but entirely in keeping with Forest’s recent transfer strategy.
Newcastle target Trafford and Rushworth
Up north, Newcastle United are quietly reshaping their goalkeeping department.
The Daily Mail report that talks are under way over moves for two young keepers: Brighton’s Carl Rushworth and Manchester City’s James Trafford. Targeting both underlines Newcastle’s intent to build depth and competition in a position that often defines tight games, especially for a club with European ambitions.
Two potential signings, two different development paths, one clear message: no complacency.
Back in north London, though, everything loops back to Saliba. If his back holds up, Arsenal can proceed with control. If it doesn’t, the urgency around Konsa and the rest of their defensive planning will spike. The window is moving quickly; Arsenal cannot afford to move slowly.
