Arsenal vs Chelsea: Defensive Doubts Ahead of Derby

Injuries cloud Arsenal’s defensive strength

Mosquera’s situation sounds slightly less alarming. Arteta called his withdrawal “more precaution than anything else,” with the defender to be checked again in training to see how he feels. Precaution or not, any doubt over a centre-back is significant when you are already without your defensive cornerstone.

William Saliba remains out with a back problem, and there is still no firm return date. Arteta admitted: “We don't really know the amount of weeks he's going to be out because it's about a healing process… the progression has been really positive in the last few weeks, but we need to wait and see.” Arsenal know that waiting for Saliba is a delicate game; rush him, and the season risks tilting.

There is at least one piece of good news. Jurrien Timber is back in full training and, in Arteta’s words, “in a really good place.” The Dutchman’s involvement will be decided after Saturday’s session, but even the possibility of his return gives Arsenal a timely lift.

Rice boost, Konsa ready, attack stretched

The midfield picture is clearer. Declan Rice, who also came off against Villa, has trained throughout the week and is expected to be available. For a side that leans heavily on his control and intensity, that matters.

If Mosquera does not make it, Ezri Konsa is ready for a full debut in central defence. Arteta has already confirmed the summer signing is “certainly available in the squad.” Throwing him straight into a derby against Chelsea would be a stern introduction, but Arsenal may have little choice.

Up front, the squad looks lighter. Deadline day stripped away depth without immediate replacement. Gabriel Jesus left, Ethan Nwaneri departed, and record sale Gabriel Martinelli moved on. None of those attacking exits were directly covered in the market, leaving Arteta to juggle a thinner set of options in the final third.

It puts even more weight on the shoulders of the established stars and the emerging faces trusted to fill the gaps.

Arteta is expected to stick with his familiar 4-2-3-1 framework, with a few key selection calls dictated by fitness.
