Arsenal Face £137m Fee for Vinicius Junior Amid Real Madrid Contract Talks
Arsenal's Pursuit of Vinicius Junior Hits a High Price
Arsenal have been informed they must pay a British-record £137 million to secure Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior this summer. The news stirred excitement among fans at the Emirates after reports emerged about Arsenal considering the Brazilian winger as a potential signing.
No formal discussions between the clubs have taken place yet, and the player's representatives have not given their approval. Still, sources suggest the move has backing within Arsenal’s hierarchy.
Vinicius’s Contract Situation Adds Complexity
Vinicius is entering the last year of his contract with Real Madrid. The Spanish club hopes to negotiate an extension, which the player also prefers. Should talks fail, Arsenal appear well placed to try and bring him to North London.
Real Madrid Set High Asking Price
Despite the contract uncertainty, Real Madrid demand a hefty sum for Vinicius. According to SPORT, via The Mirror, Los Blancos want £137 million before even considering a sale. This fee would surpass the current Premier League record, breaking Liverpool’s £125 million outlay on Alexander Isak last year.
The figure might only be a starting point; Real Madrid could push for more. Reports mention that manager Jose Mourinho opposes selling Vinicius to Arsenal. While the Gunners are reportedly able to afford the player, they may need to offload others first.
Contract Talks and Player Performance
Discussions between Vinicius and Real Madrid are expected toward the end of July. If no deal is reached soon, the club hasn’t ruled out extending his contract through the season.
Last season, the 26-year-old contributed 22 goals and 14 assists in 53 appearances for Madrid. During the 2026 World Cup, he scored four times and provided one assist in five matches for Brazil.
How Could Arsenal Fund the Deal?
Arsenal’s transfer activity this summer shows a net loss so far. They spent around £69 million on Piero Hincapie and Christos Tzolis but raised roughly £32 million by selling Jakub Kiwior, Karl Hein, and Leandro Trossard.
Given their history of limited sales revenue, the club will likely need significant departures to afford Vinicius without risking regulatory issues like the PSR or SCR.
If director Andrea Berta takes a tough stance on sales, several players could be moved on. Names potentially on the chopping block include Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard, Viktor Gyokeres, Gabriel Martinelli, Reiss Nelson, Fabio Vieira, Ben White, Ethan Nwaneri, Martin Odegaard, and Kai Havertz.
Odegaard and Havertz leaving would be unpopular among teammates, but both face injury problems and have just two years left on their contracts. Manager Mikel Arteta and Berta face challenging decisions ahead.
