Two months ago, FC Bayern were talking about Arijon Ibrahimovic as part of their future. Now he is scoring goals and sitting top of the Bundesliga table – in an FC Augsburg shirt.

From Bayern’s big promise to the exit door

“FC Bayern are planning firmly with Arijon Ibrahimovic,” the club trumpeted on 7 July when the 20-year-old signed his contract extension. The message was clear: this was no longer a kid to be tucked away in the academy. Sporting director Christoph Freund beamed for the cameras and declared: “Now it is no longer just about learning for him – now it is about making an attack, here at FC Bayern!”

For a player who had already been shuttled around on loan, it sounded like an anchor being thrown down in Munich. Ibrahimovic himself spoke of his joy at getting the chance to play for “the biggest club in the world”. The plan, internally, was that he would slot in as back-up to the tireless Luis Diaz and finally get a proper foothold.

Then the ground shifted.

Shortly before deadline day, sporting boss Max Eberl sat in front of the microphones and cracked the door open again. “If there is something there that is ready to be announced, that could be interesting for both parties, then we would be open to that again,” he said when asked about another loan.

For a player who had just been told Bayern were “planning firmly” with him, the message could hardly have been more jarring.

Irritation behind the scenes

How eager Ibrahimovic himself was to leave the German record champions is still not fully clear. Officially, Bayern framed it as a joint decision. On 1 September, Freund explained in a club statement that they had “reached an agreement with Arijon that it is best for his development if we loan him out for another season.”

Reports in Germany painted a different emotional picture. According to Sport1, Ibrahimovic was said to be “extremely irritated” by the sudden change of course. His agent, Roman Rummenigge, reportedly felt “blindsided” by Eberl’s public shift in tone, which he saw as uncoordinated. From their camp, there had been no expectation that Bayern would pull the plug on the original plan so quickly, especially after positive signals about potential game time.

Werder Bremen sensed an opportunity and made a move. Augsburg, though, won the race. FCA did not just secure a straight loan until the end of the season; they also negotiated an option to buy set at eight million euros. For a player Bayern had just tied down, that was a notable clause.

Freund tried to keep the line consistent: Ibrahimovic remained “a young player with great attributes” who “needs regular match practice at this stage”. Augsburg, he argued, could give him exactly that, and Bayern would “continue to support him closely along the way.”

Between the lines, the question hung in the air: was this simply about development, or did Bayern doubt whether he was truly ready for their level?

Criticism, doubts – and a clean break

The backdrop to the U-turn did not help him. During pre-season, Ibrahimovic missed several big chances, and criticism grew louder in parts of the Bayern fanbase. Some supporters questioned whether he had the required quality for decisive moments in big games. For a young forward trying to break into one of Europe’s most demanding squads, those murmurs can quickly become a roar.

So the club that had just promised him an “attack” role instead chose a familiar path: another loan, another city, another dressing room to adapt to.

This time, though, the move already looks different.

Augsburg bounce and an instant response

At Augsburg, the door did not just open – it swung wide. Coach Manuel Baum put Ibrahimovic straight into the starting line-up for his first Bundesliga outing with FCA. No gentle easing in, no late cameo. Trust from the first whistle.

Ibrahimovic repaid it immediately. In a 4-1 win away at Eintracht Frankfurt, he got on the scoresheet and helped drive a statement victory. Two games into the new season, Augsburg sit on six points, level at the summit, while Bayern watch one of their own prospects celebrate somewhere else.

For now, the hasty departure from Säbener Straße has given Ibrahimovic exactly what he was told he would get in Munich: minutes, responsibility, and a platform. Whether this season turns him into a Bayern starter-in-waiting or an eight-million-euro bargain for Augsburg is the next chapter waiting to be written.
