Carlo Ancelotti, Brazil’s head coach, has spoken out following Neymar's retirement from international football after a 16-year career. The Italian coach stood by his decision to include the veteran forward in Brazil's 2026 World Cup squad, even though Neymar struggled with injuries and fitness issues.

Neymar’s Final Chapter with Brazil

The 34-year-old officially ended his international journey after Brazil’s round of 16 exit against Norway at the World Cup. Despite the early departure, Ancelotti remained firm that Neymar deserved his place on the trip to North America.

Fitness Problems Caused Frustration

Ancelotti admitted Neymar’s physical condition was disappointing, especially after the star missed Brazil’s first group matches against Morocco and Haiti due to a grade 2 calf strain. Speaking to ESPN, Ancelotti said, “He didn’t contribute technically as much as we hoped because he couldn’t, but his attitude was very positive. I have a lot of affection for him, I thanked him for his behavior. Including him in the 26-man squad was the right choice.”

The coach revealed the main frustration was Neymar’s preparation before the tournament. “He could have been ready for the first game instead of the fourth. That was the only disappointing part,” Ancelotti added.

Looking Ahead: A New Generation

With Neymar stepping away, Ancelotti is focused on rebuilding the team for the 2030 World Cup. This marks a shift in Brazil’s approach, moving on from the stars of the 2010s toward emerging talents.

“One generation ends and another has to come, and it has to be better than the last one,” said the former Real Madrid manager, referring to Neymar’s decision.

Ancelotti hinted that other experienced players might also retire soon. When asked about the futures of Casemiro, Danilo, and Alex Sandro, he replied, “I think so. This period is coming to an end. We owe them thanks and I have affection for all, but players over 30 mean we need to look ahead. Some, like Marquinhos and Alisson, may stay.”
