Alisson Becker Fined £8,000 After Tunnel Incident

Alisson Becker has been hit with an £8,000 fine by the Football Association after the Liverpool goalkeeper lost his temper in the tunnel and vented his anger on the fourth official’s electronic numbers board.

The incident came immediately after the final whistle, with emotions still running high.

In a statement, the FA said: “It was alleged that the goalkeeper acted in an improper manner around the tunnel area after the final whistle. Alisson Becker has subsequently accepted the charge against him and received the standard penalty.”

He did not contest the charge. He took the punishment. The frustration, though, ran much deeper than a single outburst.

Alisson had been incensed by the late decision to award a penalty for a foul on Neco Williams, given long after the defender had taken his shot and only then made contact with the Liverpool keeper. The delay, the nature of the contact, the timing — all of it fuelled his anger as the players left the pitch.

The chaos had started even earlier. In the build-up to the incident, the fourth official’s numbers board malfunctioned, stalling a triple substitution Andoni Iraola was trying to make. The stoppage added confusion and tension to an already tight finish.

Then came the penalty call from referee Sam Barrott.

Now, the Key Match Incident (KMI) Panel has ruled that Barrott’s decision was wrong. Their review concluded the spot-kick should not have been awarded, backing up the sense of injustice that clearly boiled over in Alisson’s reaction.

The fine will stand. So will the referee’s decision on the day.

But the official verdict from the KMI Panel leaves a lingering question: how costly can one malfunctioning board and one wrong call become in a season that offers so little margin for error?
