Ajax Signs Femke Liefting on Season-Long Loan from Chelsea
Ajax have turned to a familiar face to strengthen their goalkeeping ranks, bringing Femke Liefting back to the Azerion Vrouwen Eredivisie on a season-long loan from Chelsea for the 2026/27 campaign.
The Dutch club confirmed the deal on their official website on Friday morning, sealing a move that feels as much like a reset as a transfer. Liefting is only 21, but her path has already taken in setbacks, a major move abroad and now a return to the league where she first made her name.
Back to where it all started
Liefting’s senior career began at VV Alkmaar, where her sharp reflexes and presence in the box quickly marked her out as one to watch. A switch to neighbours AZ in 2023 pushed her profile up another level, her performances drawing scouts and headlines in equal measure.
Chelsea moved decisively. The then-Barclays Women’s Super League champions signed her in January 2025, betting on potential and personality as much as current status. It was a bold jump for a young goalkeeper: new country, new culture, and a squad stacked with international talent.
The timing was cruel. Foot and hip injuries bit into her rhythm in England, stalling momentum just as she needed games. She did manage to pick up minutes during a loan spell at Newcastle United last season, but not the sustained run that forges a first-choice keeper.
Ajax offer a platform
This move changes that equation. Ajax are not just offering a shirt; they are offering responsibility. Regular game time is the clear target as Liefting looks to rediscover the tempo of week-to-week competitive football.
Technical manager Dolf Roks underlined exactly why Ajax pushed for her signature.
“Femke is a talented goalkeeper who has already proven her quality in the Vrouwen Eredivisie. She also gained valuable experience at the highest level during her time at Chelsea, where she continued to develop. We are delighted that she will add experience and quality to our squad for the coming season,” he said.
For Ajax, it is a smart piece of business: a goalkeeper who knows the league, has tasted the demands of a top WSL environment, and arrives with a point to prove.
For Liefting, it is something else again. It is a chance to play, to lead from the back, to show that the promise seen at Alkmaar and AZ did not vanish in the treatment room.
Chelsea will be watching closely. Liefting remains under contract at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2028, and a strong season in Amsterdam could reshape her future in London or raise her stock across Europe.
The next step is simple and unforgiving: win the shirt, keep it, and turn a loan spell into the season that finally unlocks her trajectory.
