Tournament Format and Tie-Break Rules

The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of four, playing three matches each to decide who advances. Thirty-two teams will move on to the knockout rounds: the top two from every group plus the eight best third-place teams.

Ties in group standings will first consider head-to-head results, goal differences, and goals scored among tied teams. If still unresolved, overall goal difference, total goals, and fair play records come into play. FIFA rankings will decide if all else fails.

Teams from the same confederation are generally kept apart during the draw, except European nations.
