2026 World Cup Knockout Stage: Updated Round of 32 Teams, Bracket, and Schedule
The 2026 World Cup is underway, and some teams have already secured their spots in the Round of 32. Co-hosts Mexico and the United States were the first to qualify, setting the stage for an intense knockout phase. The remaining teams will join them as the group stages progress.
The knockout rounds are unforgiving. Unlike the group stage where teams play multiple matches, each knockout match is a do-or-die encounter. Win, and the team advances; lose, and the tournament ends for them.
Teams Qualified So Far
From all 12 third-place teams across groups, only the top eight based on points and goal difference will move forward. These rankings will become clearer as group matches conclude.
Highlights from Qualified Teams
Mexico
After winning its opening two matches, Mexico clinched the top spot in Group A. Their Round of 32 opponent will be a third-place team from Group C, E, F, H, or I.
United States
The USMNT topped Group D, marking their first group win since 2010. They will face a third-place team from Group B, E, F, I, or J on July 3.
Germany
Germany sealed Group E after a dramatic 2-1 comeback against Ivory Coast. Their next challenge will be against a third-place finisher from Group A, B, C, D, or F.
Argentina
Lionel Messi led Argentina into the knockouts with a two-goal performance against Austria, surpassing World Cup scoring records. They topped their group after Algeria defeated Jordan.
France and Norway
Kylian Mbappe scored twice in a 3-0 win over Iraq as France qualified early. Norway joined them by narrowly beating Senegal 3-2. The group winner will be decided when these teams meet on June 26.
Colombia
Luis Diaz scored the decisive goal to put Colombia through after a tough match versus DR Congo. Their defense held strong under pressure, making them a potential surprise contender.
Understanding the Knockout Format
The Round of 32 kicks off the single-elimination phase. Matches tied after 90 minutes go into 30 minutes of extra time. If still tied, a penalty shootout decides the winner.
Group winners face runners-up or top third-place teams according to a preset bracket. There’s no room for error here.
Tiebreakers During Group Stage
If teams share the same points, rankings depend on several criteria:
- Points earned in head-to-head matches
- Goal difference in those head-to-head games
- Goals scored head-to-head
- Overall goal difference
- Total goals scored
- Fair play score based on cards
- FIFA Men’s World Ranking
Upcoming Knockout Schedule
The Round of 16 starts July 4, with quarterfinals July 9-11, semifinals July 12-13, third-place match on July 18, and the final on July 19.
