2026 World Cup Round of 32: Updated Knockout Bracket, Schedule, and Fixtures

The 2026 World Cup is progressing, and the knockout rounds are beginning to take shape. Co-hosts Mexico and the United States secured their spots in the Round of 32 early on. More teams will join as the group stage continues, filling out the knockout bracket in this expanded tournament format.

From this point forward, each knockout match could be a team’s last. Unlike the group stage where teams play multiple matches, the knockout rounds are single-elimination: one loss sends a team home, while a win pushes them into the next round.

Qualified Teams So Far

In addition to group winners and runners-up, the top eight third-place teams across all groups will advance to the Round of 32. These teams are ranked by points, goal difference, and other criteria.

Team Highlights

• Mexico clinched the top spot in Group A after winning their first two matches, including a key victory over South Korea. They will face a third-place qualifier from Groups C, E, F, H, or I in the Round of 32.
• The United States finished first in Group D, marking their third time topping their group stage and first since 2010. Their Round of 32 opponent will be a third-place finisher from Groups B, E, F, I, or J.

How the Knockout Bracket Functions

The Round of 32 starts the knockout phase where each match must produce a winner. No draws or points apply here; a tied match after regulation goes to 30 minutes of extra time. If still tied, the winner is decided by penalties.

Pairings are predetermined so group winners face runners-up or top third-place teams based on the tournament structure.

If teams finish level on points in their groups, several tiebreakers determine their rankings:

• Total goals scored
• Points in head-to-head matches
• Head-to-head goal difference
• Head-to-head goals scored
• Team conduct scores (fewer cards)

Knockout Stage Schedule

The Round of 16 begins July 4 with winners advancing through quarterfinals, semifinals, and ultimately the final scheduled for July 19. The third-place match takes place on July 18.
