Xabi Alonso Seeks Resolution on Enzo Fernandez Transfer Saga

Xabi Alonso wants the Enzo Fernandez saga off his desk and out of his dressing room.

The Chelsea head coach admitted he is waiting for a firm resolution on the midfielder’s future as Manchester City consider returning with a new offer for the Argentina international.

Fernandez has lived in transfer limbo all summer. Early in the window, Real Madrid were strongly linked, only to cool their interest and step away from the noise. That opened the door for Enzo Maresca’s Man City, who have since pushed their way to the front of the queue.

Chelsea set their stall out two weeks ago, slapping a £120m price tag on Fernandez and imposing a deadline for any club willing to meet it. City let that deadline slide, but fresh reports now indicate the Premier League champions are weighing up a bid anyway, testing just how firm that valuation really is.

While the market swirls around him, Fernandez has quietly slipped back into club life. He returned to training and featured in Alonso’s first Premier League match in charge on Monday night, starting on the bench before being introduced on 65 minutes. His cameo helped Chelsea see out a frantic 3-2 win, a reminder of the control and composure he can bring in midfield.

Asked after the game whether Fernandez will still be his player when the window closes, Alonso did not pretend to know the answer. What he wants, above all, is certainty.

“In football, I am not surprised by anything,” he told BBC Radio Five Live. “We will see. My wish is that we know what will happen for the future but we will see this week.”

That “this week” now hangs over Stamford Bridge. City’s decision — push hard for Fernandez or walk away — will shape not only Alonso’s midfield but Chelsea’s wider business in the final stretch of the window.

The London club are already braced for a flurry of exits. Liam Delap is in talks over a move to Nottingham Forest, while Mamadou Sarr is also close to departing. Nicolas Jackson, Mykhailo Mudryk and Marc Guiu are expected to follow them out, either on loan or permanent deals, as Chelsea trim a bloated squad and try to balance minutes with ambition. Dario Essugo has also been made available for a loan move.

For Alonso, the equation is simple. He has a new project, a demanding league and a restless fanbase. He needs to know whether that project is built around Enzo Fernandez — or built after cashing him in.
