Tottenham Signs Savinho for £75 Million—A New Era Begins

Tottenham have smashed through the £300 million barrier in this transfer window, landing Brazilian winger Savinho from Manchester City in a deal worth a reported initial £75 million.

The 22-year-old arrives as the headline act of Roberto De Zerbi’s overhaul, a statement signing for a club that only just dodged relegation last season and then opened the new campaign with a sobering 3-0 defeat to Brentford.

A fresh start after a stalled City spell

Savinho never quite cracked it at City. Across two seasons, he struggled to nail down a regular starting place and finished with just seven goals in 84 appearances, unable to reproduce the explosive form that first put his name on the radar.

That spark came at Girona. On loan at the Spanish club, part of the wider City Football Group network, he tore through La Liga defences and built the reputation that persuaded City to bring him in from Troyes for £30 million in 2024. The move to England, though, never caught fire in the same way, and City ended Pep Guardiola’s final two seasons without either Premier League or Champions League glory.

Tottenham are betting big that the Girona version of Savinho, not the hesitant Premier League one, is the player they are getting.

De Zerbi’s rebuild gathers pace

For De Zerbi, this is another major piece in a rapidly changing squad. Spurs have already spent heavily on Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali and Jan Paul van Hecke, while Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka have arrived on free transfers.

The Italian has not been shy about the type of football he wants. Aggressive. Front-foot. Risk-taking. Savinho fits that blueprint.

“Savio is a player who brings energy, imagination and quality in wide positions. He has the courage to attack defenders and the ability to change a game with his creativity,” De Zerbi said. “We’re very pleased to have him with us, and I’m looking forward to working with him, helping him continue to grow and seeing him bring his personality to the team.”

Tottenham needed that injection of personality. They survived last season by the skin of their teeth, avoiding a first drop into the second tier in 49 years, and the early evidence from this campaign – that heavy loss to Brentford – underlined how much work remains.

Savinho’s message and City’s windfall

Savinho cut an enthusiastic figure as he completed the move to north London.

“It’s taken a while but I’m very happy to be here,” he said in the club’s announcement. “It’s a wonderful opportunity at a brilliant club with one of the best managers in the world.

“As soon as I spoke to the head coach I knew I had to come. He told me he wants to help me reach the highest level and I believe we can do that together, as a team.”

City, for their part, stand to profit handsomely. On top of the initial £75 million, the deal reportedly includes up to £10 million in add-ons, turning a player signed from Troyes just two years ago into a major financial win for the Premier League champions.

And the business between the clubs may not be finished. Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush is also expected to swap Manchester for north London before the window closes next week, with negotiations ongoing.

High stakes in north London

Tottenham’s gamble is clear. They are pouring vast resources into a squad that only just clung to its Premier League status, trusting De Zerbi’s ideas and a cluster of new faces to drag the club away from the relegation conversation and back towards relevance.

Savinho is now at the centre of that vision: a winger with pace, flair and something to prove, walking into a team that badly needs all three.

The fee, the expectation, the manager, the context – everything points in one direction. This move has to work.
