Tottenham Signs Omar Marmoush for £60m Deal as De Zerbi Rebuilds

Tottenham Hotspur have struck a full agreement with Manchester City to sign Omar Marmoush in a deal that underlines just how hard the club are pushing to drag themselves out of mediocrity.

The 27-year-old Egyptian will arrive on an initial loan, according to The Athletic, but there is nothing tentative about the numbers. Spurs are committed to a mandatory purchase clause worth a fixed £50m, with a further £10m in performance-related add-ons. Half of those bonuses are described as easily achievable.

Marmoush is set to sign a four-year contract in north London, with an option for an extra 12 months. Eintracht Frankfurt, the club City bought him from, will not receive any sell-on percentage.

From Etihad frustration to Spurs lifeline

A move away from the Etihad Stadium had been looming for some time. Marmoush only joined City in January 2025, but regular minutes never truly materialised.

He finished last season with eight goals in 36 appearances in all competitions. The headline numbers mask the reality: in the league he managed just eight starts and 13 outings from the bench. For a forward who arrived as one of Europe’s most explosive finishers, that was a steep comedown.

City had paid up to €75m (£63m) to prise him from Frankfurt after a blistering run of 20 goals in 26 games in the first half of the 2024-25 campaign. He began brightly in Manchester too, scoring seven times in his first 16 matches. Then the minutes began to dry up.

His last competitive appearance for City came as a substitute for Erling Haaland in the 3-0 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal on August 16. From there, the writing was on the wall.

Spurs’ £300m gamble on a new era

For Tottenham, this is another swing in a summer of bold, expensive bets. Marmoush follows the £85m signing of Brazilian winger Savinho, finally completing a chase that had stretched back a year.

The Egyptian’s arrival pushes Spurs’ summer spend comfortably past the £300m mark. Roberto De Zerbi’s overhaul already includes deals for Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke, plus free transfers for Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka.

It is not window dressing. Spurs are trying to reboot a club that has just endured back-to-back 17th-place finishes in the Premier League. The margin for error is gone.

De Zerbi’s tactical weapon

Marmoush will undergo his medical in London before the move is finalised ahead of the transfer deadline. De Zerbi and his staff see him as more than just another forward option.

They are counting on his versatility — comfortable across the frontline, able to stretch defences or drop into pockets — to give them the tactical flexibility needed for a punishing schedule. With fixtures piling up and a misfiring attack still fresh in the memory, refreshing the front line has become urgent rather than optional.
