Sunderland Signs Toulouse Star Methalie for €30m

Sunderland have thrown down a serious challenge to the Premier League establishment, completing the signing of highly rated left-back Methalie from Toulouse in a deal worth €28 million plus €2m in add-ons.

For a club that only recently clawed its way back into the top flight, that figure is not just a transfer fee. It is a statement.

The 20-year-old arrives as one of Ligue 1’s standout young defenders and will wear the No. 6 shirt at the Stadium of Light. He becomes Sunderland’s second summer signing after the July capture of Thomas Meunier, as the Wearside club arms itself for a season that now includes Europa League football.

A rising club makes its move

Sunderland’s seventh-place finish last season changed the mood around the club. Respectable survival has given way to genuine ambition, and this deal underlines that shift.

By moving aggressively for Methalie, Sunderland have targeted more than just depth at left-back. They have gone after one of France’s most coveted defensive prospects, a player many expected to see move to a Champions League regular rather than a side still rebuilding its Premier League identity.

The hierarchy on Wearside have backed that belief with a sizeable outlay, signalling that last season’s surge was no one-off.

Methalie buys into the project

After sealing the move, Methalie spoke with clear enthusiasm about what he is walking into.

"I'm really excited to be here and can't wait to pull on a Sunderland shirt for the first time. This is a brilliant time to join the club," he told the club’s official channels, pointing to last season’s push into Europe as a decisive factor.

He followed Sunderland’s climb to seventh and their Europa League qualification from afar. When the chance came to join, he described it as an “easy decision”, highlighting the lure of playing both Premier League and Europa League football in front of Sunderland’s support.

That theme of ambition ran through his words again as he reflected on the next step in his career: he knows the club want more, and he wants to be part of driving that progress, giving fans “plenty to be proud of”.

Breakthrough season in France

Methalie arrives on the back of a strong 2025-26 campaign with Toulouse, where he made 30 first-team appearances and chipped in with two goals and two assists.

Those numbers only tell part of the story. Promoted to the first team in the summer of 2025 after joining the Toulouse academy back in 2014, he wasted no time making himself indispensable. His Ligue 1 debut came in August 2025; from there he quickly nailed down a starting spot and stayed there.

His rise through the French club’s system was steep and relentless. Toulouse trusted him with responsibility early, and he responded with the consistency and physical presence that now have Sunderland betting heavily on his future.

Built for the Premier League grind

Standing at six-foot-two, Methalie offers more than the profile of a traditional full-back. At Toulouse, he operated primarily as a left wing-back in Carles Martinez’s 3-4-3, tasked with patrolling the entire flank.

Martinez, who left in June to replace Kasper Hjulmand as Bayer Leverkusen head coach, leaned heavily on Methalie’s stamina and athleticism. The young defender provided width, defensive security and an outlet in transition, often turning what looked like a two-man job into his own territory.

That engine, coupled with his frame, should translate well to the Premier League’s pace and physicality. Sunderland will expect him not only to lock down the left side but to drive them forward, especially in games where they look to stretch opponents and counter with speed.

Europa nights on Wearside

For Sunderland, this signing is about timing as much as talent. A squad that surprised many by climbing into seventh now faces the double demand of domestic and European competition.

Methalie arrives at the point where the club must deepen its resources without losing the hunger that fuelled last season’s surge. He is young, battle-tested in a top European league and clearly aligned with the club’s ambition.

The money says Sunderland believe he can grow into a cornerstone of their project. The question now is simple: with Methalie and Meunier on board, how far can this resurgent club push the ceiling in a season that will test every inch of its new-found momentum?
