Sligo GAA Redefines Coaching Structure for 2027 Season

Sligo have redrawn their sideline blueprint ahead of the 2027 season, turning last year’s joint-ticket into a clear chain of command.

Dessie Sloyan now takes full control as senior football manager, with Sligo great Eamonn O’Hara stepping into the role of assistant. The pair shared the top job for just a single campaign, but the county board has decided that a defined hierarchy is the way forward.

The move was confirmed in a statement from Sligo GAA following a County Committee meeting on Monday, 24 August 2026, which also rubber-stamped the full backroom structure for 2027.

Coaching Team

Sloyan will front what the board described as a “reconfigured coaching team” with the senior footballers, flanked by O’Hara as his number two. There is heavyweight support coming in behind them as well.

• Joe McMahon of St Enda’s Omagh, Tyrone, joins as Head Coach, bringing fresh outside influence to the set-up.
• Paul Higgins and former Donegal defender Eamon McGee stay on from the 2026 ticket, offering continuity around the new arrivals.
• Another St Enda’s Omagh man, Des McGuinness, links up as goalkeeping coach.

Physical and Performance Coaching

The physical and performance side has also been tightened. Sean Boyle, who leads Performance Games Development for Sligo GAA, remains in place as strength and conditioning coach, while Michael Quinn of Killoe Young Emmets, Longford, comes in as performance coach.

The overhaul comes on the back of a middling 2026. Sligo finished fifth in Division 3 of the Allianz Football League and will remain at that level next spring. Their championship run was even shorter: a one-point defeat to Leitrim in the first round of the Connacht SFC in mid-April ended their summer almost before it began.

Now the structure is set, the question is simple: can this sharper, more defined ticket turn Sligo from Division 3 survivors into genuine contenders?
