Raheem Sterling Charged with Dangerous Driving and Nitrous Oxide Possession

Raheem Sterling has been charged with dangerous driving and possession of nitrous oxide after a motorway crash involving a Lamborghini, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary have confirmed.

The incident took place on 28 May on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley interchange, and involved only Sterling’s vehicle. Police said it was a single-car collision and no injuries were reported.

Sterling, 31, faces three charges: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, and failing to provide a specimen. He is due to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on 15 September. The forward is from Berkshire.

The case marks a stark off-field twist in the career of a player who, for a decade, sat at the heart of England’s modern era. Sterling scored 20 goals in 82 appearances for his country and was a central figure in Gareth Southgate’s run to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the Euro 2020 final.

His rise began in the academy at QPR before Liverpool handed him a senior debut and a platform to become one of the Premier League’s most exciting young attackers. In 2015 he moved to Manchester City, where he became a serial winner: four Premier League titles, five League Cups and an FA Cup crown in 2019.

The story shifted again in 2022 when he joined Chelsea, a move that never fully caught fire. As his influence waned at Stamford Bridge, Sterling spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Arsenal, seeking regular minutes and a fresh spark.

After leaving Chelsea, he signed a short-term deal with Feyenoord until the end of the season. That stint has now finished and he is currently without a club, with his immediate future on and off the pitch set to be shaped in a courtroom rather than a stadium.
