Pep Chavarria: From Spain's Lower Leagues to Chelsea's Left-Back
Pep Chavarria has signed a five-year contract with Chelsea, marking a remarkable step up in his career. Unlike many players who join elite clubs early through famous academies, Chavarria’s journey was slower, playing in Spain’s lower leagues until age 24 before making his La Liga debut. At 28, he is ready to take on one of football's biggest stages.
"I’m so excited to get started," the left-back said. "This is a dream for me as Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world. It is a big opportunity but I am prepared and will work hard to help the team achieve success."
From Catalonia to the Premier League
Born in Figueres, Catalonia, Chavarria began at his hometown club before moving to Olot, where he gained recognition in Spain’s lower divisions. His transfer to Real Zaragoza in 2020 introduced him to professional football at a bigger level. After two seasons in the second division, he earned a chance in La Liga with Rayo Vallecano in 2022.
Rayo Vallecano wasn’t expected to challenge Spain's traditional powerhouses, yet their strong team approach made them tough opponents. They rely on spotting undervalued talent, and Chavarria fit this perfectly, joining for under £2 million. Over four years, he grew into a reliable full-back, blending tough defending with physicality.
He made 125 appearances for Rayo, becoming a fixture on their left flank. Facing top managers like Xabi Alonso, then coaching Real Madrid, helped him improve. In a goalless draw against Real Madrid, his defensive skills stood out, impressing Alonso—who later targeted him after becoming Chelsea's manager.
Chavarria also played in Rayo’s 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace in last season’s Conference League final.
How Chavarria Fits Into Chelsea’s Plans
Joining alongside right-back Marco Palestra, who cost £47 million from Atalanta, Chavarria gives Alonso options to run the wing-back system that brought success at Bayer Leverkusen. His arrival also strengthens Chelsea’s left-back spot after Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid for £51.8 million in June.
The Complex Transfer Process
The transfer wasn’t straightforward. Rayo initially demanded the full release clause of £42.4 million, which complicated negotiations. The club valued Chavarria highly, comparing his performance stats to those of Cucurella.
- Last season goals: 1
- Assists: 3
- Chances created in La Liga: 27
With four years left on his contract, Rayo’s financial strength allowed them to resist offers easily. Their successful model means they face a 25% tax on profits from sales, which further influenced their stance during talks.
