Nico Elvedi's Impressive Leeds United Debut

Nico Elvedi walked out for his first Leeds United appearance and straight into a scrap with an old Premier League heavyweight. He walked off with a win, a place in the next round of the Carabao Cup, and the feeling that this new chapter might just suit him.

Leeds’ summer signing made his debut in the second-round victory over Nottingham Forest and came away sounding as impressed with his new team as the supporters were with him.

“It was great. I'm proud of this team after that performance. We deserved this win, but it was a very strong performance from the home team as well. I'm happy we are going through to the next stage,” Elvedi said, still processing a first competitive outing in white.

The tie doubled as a personal examination. Lining up against Chris Wood is never a gentle introduction, and Elvedi knew it.

“My performance was OK. I had a hard battle with Chris Wood which wasn't easy. I like it when the player I'm marking is strong, and I think I did well. There are still things for me to improve but, for my first game of the season, it was OK.”

That duel set the tone: physical, direct, unforgiving. Exactly the kind of test a new centre-back at Leeds must pass. Elvedi did enough to satisfy himself, but his focus quickly shifted to the wider picture — the dressing room he has just joined and the environment he has stepped into.

“I'm so happy to be here. I have some great new team-mates, so it was very easy to come to this club. Every day is fun coming into the training sessions and playing on the pitch with these good players.”

The move to Leeds ended an 11-year spell at Borussia Monchengladbach, a club he grew up in, on and off the pitch. Walking away from that sort of institution is never simple, and he did not pretend otherwise.

“It was hard because that club was my family. I had a lot of good memories there, but this is a new step in my career so I'm happy to be here.”

One bruising battle with Wood and one cup win down, Elvedi has taken that step. The real question now is how far he can drive Leeds in this new phase of his career.
