Newcastle's Youth Drive: Another La Masia Talent on the Horizon

Newcastle’s youth drive shows no sign of slowing.

After a summer already defined by bold moves for emerging talent, the club is now closing in on another teenager from one of Europe’s most famous academies, even as Matthias Jaissle pushes for ready-made reinforcements before the window shuts.

Another La Masia gem in Newcastle’s sights

Newcastle have already brought in 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba to bolster the midfield. Reports on Wednesday linked the Magpies with an agreement for 18-year-old Guinea international Ousmane Diabate.

Now, according to DAZN journalist Albert Fernández, they are close to adding yet another 18-year-old midfielder – this time from Barcelona’s La Masia.

“FC Barcelona is currently working on the transfers of young players while not entirely losing the option to buy them back,” Fernández said. “This is the case with the Fernández cousins. Right now, Guille is close to Newcastle and Toni to Bayer Leverkusen. Although there are other teams bidding.”

Guille Fernández has not yet broken into Barcelona’s senior side, but he has climbed through the youth ranks and established himself with Barça’s reserve team. A Spain Under-19 international, he offers versatility across central midfield, capable of operating in multiple roles through the middle.

Heading into the 2027–28 season, his market value sits at around €3 million. He is currently listed on Barcelona’s first-team roster, but the pathway to regular minutes in Catalonia is crowded and unforgiving.

Barcelona want a safety net

Fernández’s reporting underlines one key point: Barcelona do not want a clean break.

The club intend to retain some form of control over Guille Fernández’s future, likely through a buy-back clause written into any agreement. Specific figures have not been disclosed, and there are no confirmed details yet on how that clause would be structured.

No potential transfer fee has been reported either. What is clear is that competition exists for the midfielder, and any bidding war could drive the price up if several clubs push hard for his signature.

Even so, the assertion that the La Masia product is “close to Newcastle” points to another step in the club’s youth-heavy rebuild. The recruitment pattern is unmistakable: stack the squad with high-upside prospects and let them grow together.

Youth rebuild meets immediate pressure

This is not happening in isolation. While Newcastle target Fernández, they are also working on a move for a more experienced midfielder to offset the loss of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

One name on their list is Man City’s Nico Gonzalez, himself another La Masia graduate. That pursuit underlines the balancing act at St James’ Park: planning for the future while trying to stay competitive in the present.

Newcastle’s hierarchy are clearly convinced that the club can do both. The question now is how far they are willing to push the youth-first strategy as the window ticks toward its deadline – and how quickly these teenagers can turn potential into Premier League impact.
