Newcastle United's Pursuit of Christopher Nkunku: The Battle with Leipzig

Newcastle United are still in the fight for Christopher Nkunku – but they are no longer in control of it.

The 28-year-old forward is effectively finished at AC Milan. He has no squad number, no future at San Siro, and only two realistic exits on the table: a return to RB Leipzig or a move to the Premier League with Newcastle.

Right now, Leipzig hold the cards that matter most to the player.

Player wants Leipzig, Milan wait for Newcastle

On Friday, the situation looked straightforward. A reunion with Leipzig appeared almost inevitable once Fabrizio Romano revealed both clubs had made direct contact with Milan and that the Bundesliga side were pushing hard.

Since then, the picture has twisted.

TuttoMercato journalist Daniel Najjar reports that Nkunku has already reached an agreement with Leipzig and has told Milan he wants to go back to his former club. For the Frenchman, the choice is clear. He wants Germany.

Milan, though, are in no rush to grant that wish.

The Serie A club still hold the contract and, with it, the final say. According to Najjar, Milan believe Newcastle can put more money on the table than Leipzig in terms of loan fee and overall conditions, and are deliberately stalling while they wait to see if the Premier League side will up their proposal.

“Milan continues to wait for Newcastle, the Rossoneri believing they can present a better offer in terms of the loan fee and the terms,” Najjar reported. “The player currently absolutely wants to go to Leipzig.”

That marks a sharp turn from the end of last week, when a Leipzig return seemed less a possibility and more a formality.

Money versus preference

Two competing dynamics are now pulling at the deal.

On one side is the financial muscle. Calciomercato’s Daniele Longo has reported that Newcastle have already sent Milan the strongest offer from a purely economic standpoint. On the other side is the player’s will and the pull of familiarity. Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has indicated Leipzig still hold the edge because Nkunku simply finds the project – and the surroundings – more appealing.

Milan’s stance underlines the tension. The club know they can satisfy the player and send him to Germany, but they are “more than willing,” according to the Italian reports, to direct him towards Tyneside instead if Newcastle match their valuation.

The structure of the proposals shows why.

Nicholas Righi of TuttoMercato reports that Milan and Leipzig are working on a loan with an option to buy, a package that could rise to around €33–35 million (£28.5–30 million). Newcastle, by contrast, are said to be ready to go straight in with a permanent transfer worth roughly €35 million (£30 million).

For Milan, one offer is cleaner and more lucrative. For Nkunku, the other is emotionally and professionally safer.

Leipzig’s pull

Nkunku’s preference is no mystery.

Between 2019 and 2023, he became a star in Leipzig colours, scoring 70 goals and adding 56 assists in 172 appearances. He collected individual honours in the Bundesliga and established himself as one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking midfielders and forwards.

Going back there offers comfort, continuity, and Champions League-level expectations he already understands. Returning to England – and starting again at Newcastle – is a very different leap.

So the standoff continues.

Milan are waiting. Leipzig have the player’s word. Newcastle have the potential to make the best financial offer. The clock is ticking on the window.

Now the question is simple: do Newcastle push their chips all the way in for a player whose heart is set on Germany, or turn to a target who actually wants to wear black and white?
