Neil Reynolds Refuses to Panic After 5-0 Defeat by Redcar

Neil Reynolds walked back into the Warrington Rylands technical area on Saturday after a four-game touchline ban – and straight into the club’s heaviest defeat since joining the Northern Premier League.

Redcar Athletic smashed five without reply, Rylands’ third defeat in five league outings, and the kind of scoreline that usually sets alarm bells ringing. Reynolds is having none of that.

Off day, not overhaul. That’s his message.

“When people watch this interview, I don't want them to think I've lost my marbles but we just had an off day,” he told the club’s YouTube channel, standing by a dressing room he insists will not be ripped up on the back of one horror afternoon.

“There’s nobody in my dressing room that needs to worry about being replaced or me calling them out. We had a horrendous off day and we all know that, but as I've said to the lads, there's nothing we can do about it now. As a team – staff and players – we've had a bad day at the office.”

Lessons from Prescot

Reynolds has seen this film before. Around February last season, Rylands went to Prescot and were beaten 3-0. That night, he kept the squad in the dressing room. No escape, no excuses.

“Around February-time last season, we went to Prescot and got beat 3-0 and after the game, we stayed in the dressing room. Barring our new players, everyone in that dressing room today was at Prescot that day,” he recalled.

What followed that blunt inquest still drives his belief now. Rylands responded with an “unbelievable run” that took them to the brink of promotion, only denied by a penalty kick.

“We had a bit of a conversation with some open and honest words and then went on an unbelievable run and were a penalty kick away from being promoted,” he said.

That experience is the anchor he’s clinging to after Redcar’s ruthless visit.

“If we respond positively – and that's putting a performance in at Workington on Tuesday night and then building on it against Alfreton – then we'll look back on this moment and know how it feels to be that low.

“We’ve got to learn from that – we've built that side and we've had an off day.”

Game collapses after the break

For 45 minutes, Rylands were still in the fight. Redcar led only 1-0 at half time and there was no hint of the collapse to come.

But the second half unravelled quickly. By the midway point of the half, Rylands had shipped three more, Redcar adding a late fifth to complete a brutal 5-0 scoreline.

“It shouldn't have been that scoreline given where we were at half time but unfortunately, information that we passed on just wasn't retained,” Reynolds admitted.

He gave Redcar their due.

“We've been beaten by an exceptional side who have come here and done a job on us.”

Now comes the hard part: the wait. Three days to stew on a 5-0 home defeat before a long trip to Workington on Tuesday.

“It's going to be a long three days until Tuesday – it's certainly a tough one, but there's no panic.”

Rylands have been here before under Reynolds. The question now is whether this latest “horrendous off day” sparks the same kind of response – or exposes deeper cracks in a squad he still believes is built to bounce back.
