Milan's Summer Rebuild: Ruben Dias Targeted in Leao Swap

Jorge Mendes is back at the centre of Milan’s summer rebuild – and this time the target is Ruben Dias.

According to Sport Mediaset, the Portuguese super agent is exploring a blockbuster swap that would send Rafael Leao plus cash to Manchester City, with Dias moving to San Siro to anchor Ruben Amorim’s defence.

Leao’s future on the table

Milan have been open to finding a new solution for Leao for weeks. His contract runs until 2028, but the market has not responded as the club expected. The reported asking price of around €50m plus add-ons has so far failed to tempt any bidders, leaving a player of huge talent in a kind of transfer limbo.

That’s where Mendes steps in.

The agent has effectively taken the wheel of Milan’s transfer strategy this summer. He brokered Amorim’s arrival on the bench, pushed through the deal for striker Goncalo Ramos from Paris Saint-Germain, and is now behind the move that will bring Diego Moreira from RC Strasbourg.

On this latest front, Mendes spent the entire afternoon at Casa Milan, the club’s headquarters, working on possible scenarios. The boldest of them involves one of the best centre-backs in the world.

Ruben Dias in Milan’s sights

The proposal outlined by Sport Mediaset is clear: Leao to Manchester City, money on top from Milan, and Dias heading the other way.

Milan have already signed one defender, Mario Gila from Lazio, but Amorim wants more. His football demands aggressive, positionally intelligent centre-backs who can defend high and build from the back. Dias fits that profile as neatly as anyone on the market.

The Portugal international turned 29 in May and has already been linked with Real Madrid this summer, a sign of the level at which he is still regarded. He joined City from Benfica in 2020 for €71.6m and is tied to the Premier League champions until June 2029, a contract that gives the English club enormous leverage in any negotiation.

Prising him away would require a huge financial effort and a convincing sporting project. Mendes is trying to provide both.

A defensive cornerstone for Amorim?

For Milan, landing Dias would instantly reshape their back line and, with it, the spine of Amorim’s new era. For City, Leao would add another devastating one‑on‑one threat to an already stacked attack, while cash on top would protect their balance sheet.

For now, it remains an idea on the table, driven by an agent who has already left heavy fingerprints on Milan’s summer. If Mendes can pull this one off, it would be one of the defining deals of the window – and a statement about where Milan intend to go under Amorim.
