Manchester United Sign Baleba for £70m as Midfield Rebuild Accelerates

Manchester United have finally got their man. The Red Devils have completed the signing of midfielder Baleba from Brighton in a deal worth up to £70 million, a statement of intent from a club already under early-season pressure.

United will pay an initial £65m, with a further £5m tied to performance-related add-ons. The 22-year-old Cameroon international has signed a contract at Old Trafford until 2031, and the club hold an option to extend it by a further year. This is not a short-term fix. It is a long-term bet on a player they have chased for some time.

Baleba had been on United’s radar for years, his name repeatedly linked with a move to Old Trafford as he grew into one of Brighton’s most coveted assets. Now the pursuit is over, and he arrives as the latest cornerstone in a rapidly reshaped midfield.

Fernandes’ seal of approval

If there were any doubts about how highly Baleba is rated inside the club, Bruno Fernandes quickly swept them aside.

Speaking at the PFA Awards after being named the 2026 Players' Player of the Year, the United captain made it clear this transfer was no impulse buy.

"He's a very energetic player. Strong physically, he can push us up the pitch driving the ball," Fernandes said. "Young and exciting, the club have been following him for two years."

That blend of energy and power is exactly what United have been missing in too many games. A midfielder who doesn’t just recycle possession, but drags the team up the pitch.

From Lille to Brighton to Old Trafford

Baleba arrives with serious Premier League mileage despite his age. He has three full seasons in England’s top flight behind him, all with Brighton, after joining them from Lille in 2023 for an initial £23.2m.

At Brighton he built a reputation as a dynamic presence in the middle of the park, comfortable in the league’s intensity and physicality. United are paying a premium for that experience, and for the promise that there is more to come.

His signing caps a major overhaul in United’s midfield this window. Baleba joins Andrey Santos, recruited from Chelsea, and Youri Tielemans, signed from Aston Villa, in a rebuilt engine room designed to give Michael Carrick the control and drive his side have lacked.

Response to a stuttering start

The need for that overhaul was underlined brutally on the opening weekend. Carrick’s new-look midfield of Santos, Tielemans and Fernandes all started, but United slumped to a shock 2-0 defeat away at promoted Hull City.

It was a result that cut through the optimism of pre-season and dragged familiar questions back to the surface: can this United side dominate games, can it impose itself physically, can it sustain a title challenge?
