Manchester United are closely tracking Alejandro Balde’s situation at Barcelona, with the Spanish left-back edging towards the exit door after the club authorised his agent, Jorge Mendes, to find him a new team.

The decision to leave Balde out of the squad for Sunday night’s game against Elche at the Martinez Valero was no minor detail. Inside Barcelona, it is being read as another clear indication that talks over his departure are already underway and that a once-stable future is now wide open.

Balde weighs up his next move

Balde’s name is circulating across Europe. England, Portugal and Italy have all been mentioned, but, according to Catalan outlet Sport, it is Manchester United that appeal to him most.

Only a few weeks ago, the 22-year-old was adamant he wanted to stay and fight for his place at Barcelona. That stance has shifted. The presence of Joao Cancelo, and the intense competition that comes with it, has pushed Balde to reconsider his role and his minutes in a squad that is being reshaped.

United, though, are not putting all their hopes on one target. The Manchester Evening News reports that Balde is just one of several left-backs under consideration at Old Trafford.

They need one. Urgently. Luke Shaw is heading into the final year of his contract, Diogo Dalot has been pushed higher up the pitch, and both Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are naturally right-backs being asked to plug gaps on the opposite flank. It is a short-term fix for a long-term problem.

United’s cheaper alternative

On a football level, Balde fits the profile United are looking for: young, quick, attack-minded, and already tested at the top level. The club have already opened lines of communication with Mendes.

But there is another name on the list, one that could transform the financial equation. United are also studying a move for Jorge Salinas, the 19-year-old Racing Santander left-back, whose release clause is believed to be around £16 million.

That price difference is enormous. It goes a long way to explaining why United are keeping a close eye on Balde’s situation without yet placing an official bid. For now, they are watching, waiting, and running the numbers.

So far, the only concrete offer Barcelona have received for Balde has come from Benfica, and Sport claim that proposal falls well short of the valuation set at Camp Nou.

Aston Villa, by contrast, look better placed to meet Barcelona’s demands. Their interest is serious, but any move would likely depend on them first offloading one of their own players to create room in both the squad and the budget.

Barcelona walk a financial tightrope

Barcelona’s position is delicate. They need to ease the financial pressure and create margin in their wage bill, but they are determined not to lose Balde for a cut-price fee. Only a few months ago, the club internally valued him at around €40–45 million, a figure that reflects both his potential and his status as a homegrown asset.

The door to his departure is now clearly ajar. With that in mind, the sporting department has already started working on possible replacements at left-back. If Balde goes and no specialist arrives, the left side would be left to Cancelo and Gerard Martin, a thin rotation for a club expected to compete across multiple fronts deep into the season.

Barcelona know they cannot afford to be caught short. United know they cannot afford another year improvising at left-back. Somewhere between those two needs, Balde’s next chapter is about to be written.
