Manchester City Signs Ayyoub Bouaddi: The Next Midfield Star

Manchester City have won the race for one of the most coveted young midfielders in Europe, striking a deal with Lille for Moroccan starlet Ayyoub Bouaddi.

The 18-year-old, who lit up this year’s World Cup with Morocco and drew serious interest from Liverpool, will join as part of a €100 million ($116.9 million) package as City rip up and rebuild the heart of their midfield.

Liverpool had circled. So had several others. Bouaddi’s performances on the biggest stage turned quiet scouting missions into a full-blown scramble, but City have moved with the kind of financial and strategic conviction that tends to end arguments.

They will pay an initial €95 million ($111 million) to Lille, with a further €5 million ($5.9 million) in add-ons agreed. It is a huge outlay for a teenager, but City see him as a direct answer to the question that has hung over the club all summer: what comes after Rodri?

Lille did not fold easily. The French side wanted to keep Bouaddi for at least another year and held out for a fee that reflected his potential and his World Cup impact. In the end, the numbers reached a level that made resistance pointless.

“He plays like a 30-year-old”

Those who watched Bouaddi closely in Qatar are not surprised by the scale of the move.

“Really impressive — he’s only 18, but he plays like a 30-year-old,” Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira said on The Rest Is Football during the tournament, when asked about the Moroccan midfielder.

“He’s got the tactical awareness, I think he’s always well-positioned. He’s got the technical ability to play out from the back and a really strong personality. I quite like the midfield three from Morocco, but of course, he’s the talent in this team.”

That blend of tactical discipline, composure under pressure and personality is exactly what City need as they enter a new era without Rodri and Bernardo Silva.

Midfield rebuild gathers serious pace

Bouaddi arrives hot on the heels of Elliot Anderson, who joined for a club-record £116 million ($158.2 million). Two big-money midfielders, both expected to play central roles, signal just how aggressively City are reshaping the side for Enzo Maresca.

Bouaddi has agreed a five-year contract with an option for a further season, a clear statement that City view him as a long-term pillar rather than a developmental gamble. The plan is not to hide him behind senior names, but to grow the new team around him.

Tijjani Reijnders’ departure last week only sharpened the need for more bodies and more variety in the middle of the pitch. City’s hierarchy have promised Maresca full backing as he steps into the daunting role of succeeding Pep Guardiola, and their work in this window is matching that rhetoric.

City are not done.

The club still want at least one more midfielder before the window slams shut. Enzo Fernandez sits high on their list, but prising him away from Chelsea will be brutally expensive. The London club are unlikely to even listen unless offers clear $130 million.

Roma’s Manu Kone is another name under serious consideration, with City staff working deep into deadline day to give Maresca the balance and depth he needs.

Bouaddi, though, is the headline act for now. An 18-year-old who has already convinced World Cup audiences, legends like Vieira and one of Europe’s most demanding recruitment departments.

City have paid for the future. The real question is how quickly he starts to define their present.
