Manchester City Set to Renew Bid for Enzo Fernandez

Manchester City are ready to go back in for Enzo Fernandez – and this time they intend to land him.

The Premier League champions are preparing a fresh offer for the Chelsea midfielder this week, with Enzo Maresca driving an aggressive overhaul of his squad at the Etihad Stadium. Chelsea, under Xabi Alonso, are open to cashing in on several first‑team players, and Fernandez suddenly sits right at the centre of that strategy.

City return to the table

City have tracked Fernandez all summer. They baulked at Chelsea’s informal £120 million “verbal exit clause” earlier in the window, missing the deadline the London club had set for that figure to be met. That number is now off the table, but the door is very much still open.

Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano outlined the new reality on Monday, revealing that City are “prepared… to return to the table of negotiations and to submit a new proposal to Chelsea. So, new Manchester City bid for Enzo is coming.”

Chelsea’s stance has shifted from a hard line to something more pragmatic. The message from Stamford Bridge is clear: they will still consider letting Fernandez go if they receive what they regard as the right money and can strengthen the squad in the process.

Crucially, City sense their moment. The club have already banked significant fees from the departures of Tijjani Reijnders, Nico Gonzalez and Rodri, while Bernardo Silva’s exit as a free agent has eased pressure on the wage bill. Savinho and Oumar Marmoush are also expected to leave this week, creating more room – financially and tactically – for a marquee midfield signing.

Romano reports that on the player’s side there is no hesitation. “Enzo says yes to Manchester City,” he said, stressing that Fernandez has given a green light to the move, the contract and the personal terms. City, he added, are “ready to beat the game and to return very, very strong for Enzo Fernandez.”

A strange night at Craven Cottage

While all this played out in the background, Fernandez cut a slightly awkward figure under the lights at Craven Cottage on Monday.

For the first time in a Premier League match since December 2025, the Argentina international started on the bench. Alonso went with Romeo Lavia and Reece James as his central pair in the 3-2 win over Fulham, a bold call that only intensified talk of a potential summer exit.

When Fernandez finally entered in the 65th minute, replacing Lavia, he was greeted with boos from sections of the home support, still smarting from his role in Argentina’s World Cup elimination of England. It was a reminder of his status on the biggest stage – and of the kind of edge he brings to any midfield he anchors.

After the game, Alonso was pointedly non-committal when asked about the 23‑year‑old’s future. “We will see,” he said. “My wish is that we know what will happen for the future but we will see this week.” No reassurance, no firm denial. Just a manager who knows a decisive few days are coming.

Maresca reunion on the horizon?

A move to Manchester would reunite Fernandez with Maresca, who worked with him at Chelsea and never hid his admiration. The Italian previously labelled the World Cup winner “fantastic” and a “leader”, highlighting his influence both in possession and out of it.

Maresca has stayed disciplined in public. Asked about Fernandez earlier this month, he refused to bite.

“In this moment I have to give you the same answer since day one, which will be always the same,” he said. “He is a player from another club and I don’t think it’s correct to talk about other players. I’m not going to say anything about players who are not with us.”

Behind that line, City have already spent heavily this summer – bringing in Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, Mathys Detourbet from Troyes and Jeremy Monga from Leicester City, with Ayyoub Bouaddi due from Lille. Those are smart, long‑term pieces. Fernandez would be something else entirely: a statement, a centrepiece, a midfielder to build around.

Chelsea tied him down to a long-term deal, with another six years still to run, but the player is understood to be keen to move on and test himself at the heart of a team that expects to compete for every major trophy, every season.

City are coming back to the table, armed with fresh funds and the player’s approval. Chelsea are listening. The only question now is simple: who blinks first in one of the defining negotiations of this summer window?
