Liverpool Urged to Intervene in Arsenal Midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly's Transfer Talks
Liverpool have been encouraged to step into the transfer race for the talented Arsenal midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly. The young player has recently been presented to Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester United, but many believe he could strengthen Liverpool’s left side defense by adding competition.
Arsenal Open to Domestic Offers
Sources from talkSPORT reveal that Arsenal have offered Lewis-Skelly to both Manchester United and Chelsea. This move comes as the club aims to balance finances after spending £75 million on Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle last week. At 19 years old, Lewis-Skelly faces an uncertain role due to the arrival of midfielders like Guimaraes, Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino.
Calls for Liverpool to Enter the Race
Darragh MacAnthony, owner of Peterborough United, believes Liverpool should make a move to bring Lewis-Skelly to Anfield to challenge for the left-back position currently held by Milos Kerkez. MacAnthony said: I love him, I think he's a great, young player. Why hasn’t he been offered to Liverpool? Someone asked what he's worth and I said anywhere from £40-60 million for a player of that age and English nationality.
Strengthening Defensive Options at Liverpool
Kerkez is expected to be Liverpool’s first-choice left-back this season, competing with Kostas Tsimikas, who is eager to keep his place. MacAnthony believes Lewis-Skelly would be a valuable addition because of his ability to play multiple roles. When asked if he would welcome Lewis-Skelly at Liverpool, MacAnthony replied: All day long. We need competition for our left-back. No disrespect to Tsimikas, but not for me. Plus, Lewis-Skelly can also operate in midfield. Liverpool really need a player with strong defensive skills combined with technical attacking ability, which he has.
Player’s Perspective and Possible Frustration
The potential transfer has raised questions about how Lewis-Skelly might feel, having made only five Premier League starts last season. Presenter Max Scott questioned MacAnthony on whether the player might be frustrated being offered to other clubs after breaking into Arsenal’s first team. MacAnthony acknowledged the business nature of football but recognized that Lewis-Skelly might feel the emotional impact.
What’s Next?
Manchester United and Chelsea must decide soon whether to pursue Lewis-Skelly, whose valuation is around £45 million, before the transfer window shuts. Meanwhile, Liverpool could take MacAnthony’s advice and enter talks to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.
