Liverpool Pursues Barcola as Arsenal Eyes Alvarez

Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has moved into a new gear, Arsenal are pushing hard for Julian Alvarez, and Manchester City are ripping up and rebuilding their midfield in a window that is starting to feel like a chain reaction.

Across Europe, one move is unlocking another. And nobody looks settled yet.

Liverpool push on Barcola as Gakpo looms as makeweight

Liverpool’s long chase of Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola has taken its most encouraging turn yet. Fresh talks with PSG have been described as positive, and club insiders in Paris now expect the French international to leave this summer.

That doesn’t make it simple. Far from it.

PSG’s Qatari owners want well in excess of £110m for Barcola, a fee big enough to scare Arsenal away from the table. Liverpool, though, remain intent on finding a way, having already seen two bids rejected for Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh as they look to deepen their options out wide.

To make Barcola remotely viable, Liverpool may have to sacrifice a key attacker. Cody Gakpo is the obvious candidate. Manchester City retain an interest, and Tottenham have also been linked, in what feels less like a transfer window and more like a property chain: one sale needed to unlock the next big buy.

Inside Anfield, the urgency is clear. With a week left in the window, Liverpool’s football hierarchy, led by sporting director Richard Hughes, know the squad has to be bigger and better balanced for Andoni Iraola’s intense style to survive a full season. The problem? Too many weak spots, not enough money.

As one source put it, “it’s like they’re in a boat with six different leaks but which one do you plug?” Spend heavily on a winger like Barcola and you risk leaving other areas exposed. Hesitate, and you risk the season before it has even settled.

Arsenal eye Julian Alvarez to finish their summer

Arsenal, fresh from a strong summer of business, are trying to land one more statement signing: Julian Alvarez.

The Atletico Madrid forward is wanted to sharpen Mikel Arteta’s forward line as the Gunners look to defend their Premier League title. Alvarez initially leaned towards Barcelona, but he is now said to be open to Arsenal’s proposal.

This is where the dominoes start to wobble.

Atletico’s pursuit of Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, initially on loan with a possible obligation to buy, could smooth Alvarez’s exit. Chelsea would rather a permanent sale as they trim a bloated squad before deadline day, and Aston Villa are also considering Jackson, with a £65m deal discussed.

If Atletico secure Jackson, Alvarez’s path out of Madrid clears. And that, in turn, could hand Arsenal the final piece of their attack.

Manchester City: €100m for Bouaddi, Savinho sold, eyes on Enzo

On the other side of this sprawling market, Manchester City are reshaping their squad with ruthless clarity.

City have agreed a €100m deal with Lille for 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi. The Morocco international will cost an initial €95m with a potential €5m in add-ons, making him the third most expensive signing in City’s history. Only Jack Grealish and £116m man Elliot Anderson have commanded higher fees.

Bouaddi arrives as part of a major midfield overhaul after the exits of captain Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders in Enzo Maresca’s first summer in charge. City want legs, control and depth in the middle – and they are paying heavily to get it.

At the same time, City have sanctioned a record sale. Winger Savinho has joined Tottenham in a deal worth £85m, the highest outgoing fee in the club’s history and enough to push Spurs’ summer spending past £300m. Tottenham will pay £75m up front, with £5m in guaranteed add-ons and a further £5m potentially to come.

City are not done. They are interested in Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo and could yet return for Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, a move that would instantly become one of the defining transfers of the window.

Newcastle move for Gonzalez as Guimaraes replacement

Newcastle United have found their man to plug the Bruno Guimaraes gap.

They have agreed a £52m deal with Manchester City for midfielder Nico Gonzalez, who is set to become their biggest signing of the summer. The 24-year-old Spaniard will cost an initial £48m with £4m in add-ons, giving City a small profit on the £49m they paid Porto in January 2025.

For Newcastle, this is about experience and stability. Gonzalez, despite his age, will be the oldest player they have signed this summer as they react to the departures of Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali from the heart of their midfield. He is undergoing a medical today and is expected to step straight into a central role.

Chelsea cash in: Delap to Forest, Jackson in demand

Chelsea’s clear-out continues to reshape the Premier League.

Nottingham Forest have agreed a club-record £50m deal to sign striker Liam Delap. The former Ipswich forward has lost his place as Chelsea’s No 9 to Joao Pedro after a poor first season at Stamford Bridge, in which he scored just two goals in 41 appearances.

Chelsea will still bank a £20m profit on a player they signed for £30m. Delap is due to complete his medical on Wednesday.

Then there is Nicolas Jackson. Out of favour and firmly on the market, the striker has attracted interest from Atletico Madrid and Aston Villa. Atletico have opened talks over a loan with a possible obligation to buy, while Villa are exploring a £65m move.

Chelsea, for their part, would prefer an outright sale and are open to bringing in a versatile attacker if enough outgoings are completed. Marcus Rashford is one of the names that has been discussed internally.

Jackson’s future is tangled up with Alvarez’s at Atletico and Arsenal’s need for a forward. One move here could decide two others.

Manchester United: Baleba in, Balde targeted

Across town in Manchester, United have quietly completed a major piece of their own rebuild.

Carlos Baleba has joined from Brighton for an initial £65m, signing a five-year deal at Old Trafford. The Cameroon international becomes the third midfield arrival under Michael Carrick this season, taking United’s spend in that area to £148m.

United could pay a further £5m in add-ons, and Baleba believes Carrick’s guidance can push his game to a new level.

With the midfield now rebuilt, attention has switched firmly to left-back. United have been handed encouragement there too. Spanish outlet Marca report that Alejandro Balde has decided he wants to leave Barcelona after being left out of the squad to face Elche and seeing Joao Cancelo arrive.

United are frontrunners for Balde’s signature, but their preference is a loan deal rather than the permanent move that had previously been discussed.

Watkins and Martinez absent as Villa face uneasy questions

At Aston Villa, two absences told their own story.

Ollie Watkins and Emi Martinez were both missing from the matchday squad, fuelling talk that both could be on the brink of exits. Watkins, in particular, looks very close to a move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.

For a club and a striker who have been so good for each other, the manner of the separation threatens to stain Watkins’ legacy at Villa Park. The timing, the destination, the sense of Villa being left short – it all lingers.

If Villa do lose Watkins and potentially move for Nicolas Jackson, they will be dragged directly into the same transfer web that is already binding Arsenal, Atletico, Chelsea and half of Europe’s elite.

The window has a week left. The numbers are eye-watering, the names are huge, and the deals are increasingly interlocked. One decision on Gakpo, Alvarez, Jackson or Barcola could redraw the attacking lines of three or four clubs overnight.
